buggachat laptop fic: Ladybug keeps setting patrol schedules to pair up Multimouse and Aspik, having told Chat Noir it's because she ships Multimouse/Aspik. Chat Noir does not know what to think of this. Adrien isn't supposed to know Multimouse is Marinette; Marinette isn't supposed to know Aspik is Adrien. But there's still the nagging similarities between Marinette (when she doesn't think Adrien's listening) and Ladybug, and he only gave Multimouse his ring bc he KNEW she was Ladybug lying...
(2/3) Further to my Aspikmouse request for the buggachat laptop fund: substituting Adrien wielding any Miraculous but Cat, Snake, or Ladybug works too, as long as Ladybug knows itâs Adrien. As does substituting Marinette wielding any Miraculous but Ladybug, Rat, or Cat, as long as Chat Noir knows itâs Marinette. (Come to think of it, Snake!Marinette/Rat!Adrien could be all kinds of amusingâŠ)
(3/3, two sentence prompts) (sometime after Desperada) âWhy would I offer him a different Miraculous, Chat? Did I not put him through enough hell the first time?â

Chapter 1: In Which Chat is Slightly Less Helpful Than He Thinks He Is

Ever since Max got Akumatized again, patrol has been a quiet hell. Chat is fairly certain he knows why: based on comments she made during the Gamer fight, it seems like being Ladybug and training to be the new Guardian (and whatever else she has going on in her civilian lifeâshe may not be Marinette, but given how similar they are heâs willing to bet sheâs just as busy as a civilian) has left her with no time to do any of the things that calm her. Apparently Fu outright told her that her training was complete way earlier than she expected, meaning she has a mantle of responsibility she isnât ready for but none of the choice that goes with it. His Lady is quietly collapsing, and try as she might to hide it, he can tell. The bags under her eyes are extending past the bottom of her mask, and her shoulders are almost constantly up by her ears.
Itâs only been a week, and Chat realizes that if this keeps going on, Ladybug is going to burn out. Which means he has to do something. Her responsibility is Paris; his responsibility is her.
She misses a step, on a rooftop halfway through patrol, stumbles into his armsâhe canât help noticing how familiar it feels. âOkay,â he says, quietly. âWeâre stopping here for tonight.â
Ladybug shakes her head. âI can keep going,â she mumbles, her eyes closed.
Chat cradles her cheek in his palm, and itâs a testament to how exhausted she is that she melts into it without even a token protest. âYou keep telling me that âcanâ doesnât mean âhave to,ââ he says, trying to control his voice as she snuggles into him. âYou need rest, Bug.â
âHypocrite,â she mumbles, lazily smacking his side.
âExpendable hypocrite,â he retorts.
She opens her mouth to protest, but he sits down, yanking her into his lap before she has time to speak. She squeaks instead.
âKitty purrs time,â he says, pressing her against his chest as he begins to rumble.
She gasps, quietly, snuggling in closer, and his purr interrupts for a moment as he swallows, trying to control his breathing, his blush.
They sit like that for a few minutes, Ladybug sinking into his arms, before Chat decides sheâs calm enough to talk things through. âI think,â he says, âthat we need to start bringing on some teammates. Full-time.â
Ladybug stiffens. âChaton,â she whispers, âIâm not sure thatâs a good idea.â
He closes his eyes and sighs. âBugaboo, we canât keep doing this by ourselves,â he says. âHow long has it been since youâve slept a full night?â
She looks away instead of answering.
He begins to press his palms into the small of her back, working out the kinks in her muscles. âWe need help,â he says, carefully avoiding the word âyouââif she thinks sheâs the only one hurting, he knows sheâll accept that and keep shouldering the burden until it breaks her. The only way he can convince her is if she thinks he needs it too. âI know Rena would jump at the chance, and Carapace seems like he would do anything if she asked.â
âI donât want to put this on them,â she grumbles. âThis is our job. They have lives outside ofââ
Chat snorts. âYour job is to protect Paris,â he says. âMy job is to look after a hyperactive genius who thinks she canât go to bed until sheâs personally solved every problem in the city.â He squeezes her protectively, not missing the way she whimpers in his arms. âIf that means I have to meow annoyingly at you until you agree to start sharing the burdenâŠâ
âChaton, Iâm fiââ
âMEOOOOOOOWWWWWW!â he screeches into her ear.
She shrieks, trying to pull away, but heâs holding her too firmly. âDammit, Chat!â she cries. âWe canât just have the other Miraculi out!â She shudders. âWhat if Hawkmoth ambushes one of them as a civilian?â
âWhat if youâre so sleep-deprived you canât figure out how to use your Lucky Charm?â Chat rebuts. âOr Iâm too slow and you get hit by something I canât block?â
âChatonââ
âMeeeeoooowwwww!â he interrupts, then takes a deep breath. He didnât want to do this, but⊠he has to go for her weak spot. He knows how painful this is to herâhe knows about the night terrors she keeps having, the reason she was so wrecked once Gamer got taken down, but if it keeps her alive and sane he will do whatever it takes. âMy Lady,â he says, âif we donât start bringing on a team I am going to die again.â
She stiffens in his arms. âDonât you dare,â she hisses.
âItâs not like I have a choice!â he snaps. âYou canâtââ
She scrambles out of his arms, shingles cracking beneath the force of her footfalls, and jabs him in the chest with her finger. âDonât act like you canât do this without me too, Mister Bug!â
He snatches her wrist. âNot as well as you can, and I think Reflekdoll proved that!â he growls. Then he sighs. âPlease, My Lady,â he says. âIf you wonât do it for yourself⊠at least do it for me.â
She blinks up at him. âChaton?â she whispers.
âI havenât slept right in months,â he says. Not since Desperada, but she doesnât want to know that part. âI keep seeing us⊠losing. You dead and broken and⊠and Iâm by myself, and thereâs nothing I can do to save youâŠâ Heâs shared more than he intended to, and his voice breaks as his chest squeezes tight. âPlease,â he whispers. âAt least Carapace. I canât keep protecting you on my own.â
That got⊠uncomfortably truthful. He hadnât meant to share thatâhell, he hadnât even known he was feeling like that. But itâs obvious now, after his mouth ran away with him, that heâs as overwhelmed as she is. Heâs been putting on a good show for his Instagram, but⊠whenâs the last time heâs slept a full night?
Ladybug stares at him, her lip quivering, and for a moment heâs sure sheâs going to snap at him again. But then she sets her jaw. âIâm not bringing Queen Bee back,â she says. âI donât trust her.â
The levee in Chatâs heart breaks, and his whole body is flooded with emotion at once. Instantly, his head is in her lap, pressed up against her stomach. âThank you,â he gasps. âThank you thank you thank you.â Heâs sobbing into her lap, and she strokes his head, scratching just behind his ears in the way he loves so much; bliss shoots down from his scalp through his spine as he purrs urgently against her.
âRena and Carapace, obviously,â she says.
He squirms, snuggling deeper into her arms. âViperion seems competent,â he mumbles. âThoughts on Monkey?â
âHmmâŠâ Ladybug says, and he can hear the mirth returning to her voice for the first time since he backed off the platform. âChildish and irresponsible. Keep him temp, I think.â
âOkay.â Chat nods. âI like Pegase, though.â
Ladybug nods. âYeah, heâs pretty good,â she says. âIâve been thinking about bringing Ryuko back tooâshe did pretty well against Gozen.â
âAgreed,â Chat says. Then the side of his mouth quirks down. This is probably not the best time to bring this up, not when sheâs actually agreeing with him and this might cause her to reconsider, but⊠itâs kind of important. The rules are set for a reason. âWait,â he says, âI know who Pegase and Ryuko are.â
She raises an eyebrow. âYeah, so?â
Itâs a bit petulant of him to ask, but⊠well, Marinette is so impressive that sheâs the only person heâs ever seriously considered might be Ladybug, and if he hadnât seen them both together on two separate occasions heâd still be pretty suspicious. âI thought you werenât supposed to bring back wielders whose names I know?â
Ladybug launches to her feet, sending him sprawling out of her lapâthen she leans down and locks eyes with him, and crushes his bell in her fingers. âNo,â she spits, yanking him forward into a suspiciously exact replica of Marinetteâs famous Penance Stare. âI am not putting her back in the field.â
Heâs not sure what to say. He knows she doesnât want Multimouse back but he doesnât know whyâhe has suspicions, but thereâs no way, right? Heâs been so careful with this whole conversation, and now Adrien Brain, which is so obsessed with rules and consistency, has just launched his foot through the ground into an occupied fire ant nest. His lungs shudder at the fire in her eyes, unable to even speak.
(Heâs disappointed in his Chat Noir Brain as well, for being so excited at the incongruity of her reaction. Even after everything, sheâs still oddly vehement about not using Multimouse.)
He wants to tell her thatâs not what he meant, that heâs worried about bringing Ryuko and Pegase back butâsomething about her refusal to bring Marinette back rubs him the wrong way.
âWhy?â he croaks, finally. His bell clonks a little bit in her hand instead of jingling. âYou know sheâs the best temp weâve ever hadâshe did both of our jobs!â
Ladybugâs eyelid twitches, and he realizes heâs crossed a line he didnât know about. Thereâs something between her and Marinette; something heâs not aware of. The two girls have had some kind of relationship since before EvillustratorâŠ
Ladybug trusts Marinette so much and has never specified the gender of the person she likes. And nobody seems to know who Marinette has a crush on. Is she⊠trying to protect her girlfriend?
She stares for a second, then collapses next to him and sighs. âMaybe I should bring her back,â she grumbles.
âWhat? No!â Chat says, gripping at her wrist. âIf you donât want her backââ
âItâs not a want thing,â Ladybug says. âIâm just⊠not sure she can.â
Chat bristles. âWhat?â he cries. MaybeâŠÂ not girlfriend? Does she⊠not like Marinette? Is that it? âMy Lady, I love you, but I will not allow you to besmirch the abilities of my precious mouse.â
Ladybug opens her mouth, but all that comes out is a weird gagging noise as her face turns bright red. âYou have⊠that much faith in her?â she croaks.
Chat raises an eyebrow. âMy Lady,â he says, âI only gave her my ring because I thought she was you.â
Ladybug chokes.
Chat canât tell if sheâs flattered or angry. âI remember you were friends,â he says. âDid something⊠happen between you two?â
Ladybug closes her eyes, licks her lips. âHave you ever worn two Miraculi at once?â she murmurs. âIt⊠does things to your body.â She leans back against the shingles. âI think I asked more of her than I ever should have.â
âOh,â Chat says. âNo, Iâno, I havenât.â He has, actually; heâs wondered why he felt so tired as Aspik. He thought it was just being awake for three months, but Viperion never seemed to falter. âIs she okay?â He doesnât think Marinetteâs been any worse, physicallyâbut then, sheâs been running so ragged lately, how can he tell?
Ladybug shrugs. âSheâs fine,â she says. âJust needed a good nightâs sleep.â She sighs, pressing her chin into her fist. âWish I could bring Adrien back on,â she mumbles.
Chatâs heart inflates painfully in his chest like a balloon hooked up to an oxygen tank. Even after he failed her so many times, she still wants to bring him back on? âThat guy you chose for the snake before Viperion?â he squeaks.
Her head snaps toward him. âYouâyou knew about that?â she hisses.
Chat snorts. âI saw Agreste with the egg-hood,â he says. âThat is not what Viperion looked like.â
Ladybug frowns. âRight,â she says. âAlso?â She reaches up, flicks his nose. âNot happy with you for stealing his joke.â
Chat rolls his eyes, jabbing her in the tummy. âHe stole mine, My Lady,â he says. âAnyway. Bringing him back on sounds like a great idea!â
She smiles, her cheeks dusting pink, then her face falls. âNo,â she says. âNo way.â
Chatâs chest squeezes. Oh, good, she hates him. âWhy?â he says. âI mean, he may not have been the right snake, but that doesnât mean he couldnât be good for anotherââ
âWhy would I offer him a different Miraculous, Chat?â she snaps. âDid I not put him through enough hell the first time?â
What?
Chat looks at her with confusion. SheâŠÂ doesnât hate him? Sheâs been concerned about him?
âHe spent three months trying to save me without sleep,â she says. âIâm⊠pretty sure it broke him.â She clutches at her shoulders. âI trust him, Chaton, but⊠I canât put him through that. Not again.â
Oh. Oh god.
âMy Lady,â he says. He can see the guilt is killing herâhe doesnât want her to keep beating herself up over something that was his choice. âYou⊠he talked to me about that, actually.â
A look of horror flashes across her face. âWhat?â she says. âWhen?â
âParty Crasher,â he says. Thatâs plausibleâViperion was there, it was Adrienâs house, and there was a period Ladybug was unaccounted for. âHe was actually hoping heâd get another shot to help you out.â
Her eyes widen, her cheeks dusting red. âWhat?â she squeaks.
âIââ
âOkay!â she yelps, shooting to her feet. âOkay okay.â She starts pacing, pressing her palms to her forehead. âIâOkay. So, IâI can bring him back?â She does an excited little bunny hop, and his head leaps. âI can bring him back!â
âYouâreâpretty excited,â he says. âYou know him?â
She freezes, her foot skittering on the roof. âThatâs⊠complicated?â she says. âAnyway, we should decide who pairs up with who.â She sits back down, folding her knees into her chest. âMultimouse might be more comfortable with a more⊠experienced wielder?â
His eyebrows shoot up, and his stomach begins to flip. âAspik has more experience than anyone except us,â he says. âYou said three months, right?â
âYep.â Ladybug starts shaking a little. âAnd⊠oh, this isâIâm not sure this is a great idea.â
âWhy not?â
âWell, uhâŠâ Ladybug bites her lip. âSheâs, uh, sheâs in love with him.â
Chatâs earsâboth his human ones and his cat onesâare suddenly crushed under a burning vise, and his lungs are full of cotton candy. âSheâs what?â he croaks.
She looks askance at him. âWait,â she says. âYou didnât know?â
âNo?â he says.
Ladybug snorts. âCome on, Chat,â she says. âYouâve been watching that class, right?â She reaches out and squeezes his shoulder. âI think the only person who doesnât know about her crush is him.â
âWho did you hear this from?â he asks. âTheâthe Ladyblogger? Sheâs not exactly objective when it comes to themââ
Ladybug shakes her head. âMarinette told me herself,â she says. âShe just hasnât beenâŠâ She closes her eyes. âAble to say it.â
*
Marinette loves him. She said she loved Chat Noir, and Ladybug said she loved Adrien.
He arrives at the meeting place for his and Multimouseâs first patrol, unspooling the trompo into his hands, and sees Multimouseâs familiar space buns. Thatâs Marinette right thereâMarinette, his best civilian friend aside from Nino. A girl who he wouldâand hasâdropped everything to help. A girl he hasnât been able to get out of his head for the last week, since Ladybug dropped her bomb on him. A girl who, if it hadnât been for Ladybug, he would absolutely be in love with.
She looks up at him, her eyes widening, and she squeaks. âH-hi!â she yelps. âAre you, um, Queen Beeâs replacement?â
âYep,â he says, pressing his fists to his hips with an exaggerated gaze off into the distance. âSapis, at your service.â
âSapis?â she says. âWisdom?â
He grins. âOld Latin pun,â he says. âSi sapis, sis apis.â He holds out a hand to shake hers. âIf youâre wise? Be a bee.â
She stares at him, and for a moment heâs worried that heâs ruined his third first impression with herâbut then she lights up, and starts to laugh.
Itâs bright and sunny and it shoots right through his heart, and he realizes: I am completely and utterly screwed.
