second of all

i didn’t super Learn To Write anywhere in that it’s like. all osmosis and practice. which i think is pretty common for a lot of writers. like i’ve never done a class or workshop or such. i did pay for a 2-hour talk by maggie stiefvater back in 2020 (it was made virtual) about story craft, and that was nice.

- John Green (what if i @‘d him. wouldn’t that be crazy)

*you might go UGH. but like. just in general catcher is beloved to me and his style’s greatly influenced mine. to the point where my first ever novel when i was 14 (it was just ok i would not put it in a portfolio today obviously), when it was read by my at the time psychiatrist, his first comments were “it’s good. it’s like catcher in the rye.”

also. also. i did not Copy anything from catcher for SAOW. at all. BUT ! my version of buck’s internal cadence DOES lend itself a little bit to holden caulfield on purpose. just the rambling structure of sentences, the repetition, the filler, etc. holden reads as ADHD to me, which is part of it.

i’m also aware that every writer on my Inspirations list is white. and like. i do read plenty of non white authors especially indigenous ones. however due to like. the omnipresence of whiteness as a default, those authors weren’t the ones i was reading when my brain got Molded and i was developing a style. personally i don’t feel bad about it bc like regardless of who influenced my style and the way i approach storytelling it’s still Mine, and any story i tell is going to be some example of indigenous storytelling bc im the one telling it
