From what I understand, that’s just an unofficial Android port of Sanicball for Windows, which I first discovered when they played it on AGDQ almost a year ago.

It’s an alright game! For what was supposed to be a dumb joke game it actually ended up kind of fun, to the point where I think real Sonic games could maybe learn a thing or two from what Sanicball accomplishes.

Because, it’s like, Sanicball doesn’t really bother with the whole… heavily scripted, highly linear, pseudo-cinematic stuff that all 3D Sonic games have been since Sonic Adventure. It’s just a game where you roll a ball and go really, really fast. Whatever happens as a result of those two concepts, happens.

And that’s, like… that’s what the Sega Genesis Sonic games were kind of about.

So if you took Sanicball, removed all of the awful stupid meme garbage, and actually put a fully-animated Sonic in there, you’d have the beginnings of something that could be kind of awesome. I have visions of a Sonic game that’s almost like SSX, where you spend 50% of your time in the air, just doing tricks and going really fast.

That’s kind of what Sonic Rush was, actually, and you can see a lot of very obvious similarities between Sonic Rush’s boost meter and the boost meter in SSX, so the inspiration is pretty obvious. But, again, Sonic games took that stuff in a different direction.

Like, for example, Sonic games glue you to the floor. That’s just what they do. Unless you push the jump button or touch a ramp trigger, you are stuck. Sanicball and SSX are a little more free form than that. Ramps happen naturally. If you soar over a slope, it’s because you had too much horizontal momentum. And in the case of SSX, that ends up being fun in its own right, because you can bust out a trick combo while you’re up there.

And it’s like, I get it. Sonic games have so much scripting because they want the game to look like this, but actually be possible for normal humans (that video is a tool-assisted speed run, and is likely impossible with human reflexes).

But I still think there are lessons to be learned here. And really, I just want another game like this. EA tried to reboot SSX, and it didn’t stick. I think it’s time for somebody to try again.
