Whether you call them sand crabs, mole crabs, or sand fleas, these crustaceans can be great indicators of a beach’s health. Surveys have shown that these are some of the first species to disappear when a beach ecology is in trouble. By monitoring their populations we can keep track of how healthy certain beach ecosystems are. Kids sometimes get their backs and fronts confused, as they dig backwards and have small digging appendages that can look like antennae.
