The eternal debate is DSB, SSB, BB. I like me some sand for sure, but I also like tons of random flow and I definitely don’t like bare spots. in the past, I’ve tended to keep relatively deep sand so it can blow into whatever hills/valleys it wants and I don’t see the glass underneath, so I’m happy.
But I don’t want 4-6″ of sand in my 180g. Two reasons: mostly, I want this thing to keep running for decades and am a bit nervous about the nutrient buildup in a deep sand bed. I might put a bunch of sand in the fuge so it’s easier to maintain, we’ll see. Second, that much sand eats into valuable display space and the edge always looks gross.
But bare bottom tanks are no fun. they don’t look like the ocean and I don’t want to have to keep it clean. plus, I want my inverts and some bottom-dwelling corals to be happy in the sand.
So, I think I’m going to do an epoxy faux sand bed plus about 1″ of sand.
The Plan
When the tank first comes home, after testing the seams with tap water:
Cover the inside glass with waxed paper and hang some dropcloth from the rim so the outside is protected. Make sure that waxed paper goes all the way to the bottom, but doesn’t curve onto the bottom panel. This should make it so the epoxy could be broken up and removed if I ever needed to tear it all down and the waxed paper should slide out after the epoxy sets.
Mix up some epoxy and some sand (I think I’ll use reef flakes) and make a thin coating on the bottom, maybe 1/4″ thick. really, just a couple flakes of sand thick. This should mean about 0.15 cubic feet of epoxy/sand mix, or about 1.25 gallons. If I do a 50/50 sand/epoxy, that means I need 2-3 qts of epoxy, I’ll probably buy a gallon
As soon as I get it spread out, I want to put another thin layer of sand on top of the freshly-laid epoxy, maybe press gently with a sheet of plastic so the surface of the epoxy gets laden with sand shapes and isn’t as glossy.
Place the rock in the tank like I want so it’s sitting on the epoxy, Pressing the rock into the epoxy a little. It won’t be a real adherance, but should prevent animals from being able to move the rocks.
Let it cure fully, maybe a week?
Add the rest of the rocks, another inch of sand, and the water
Hopefully, this gives my critters the sandy bottom some of them like, gives me the sandy bottom I like to see, and lets me have lots of flow without lots of sand, and I never see the glass. My hope is that by using the same sand in the epoxy, and by pressing the extra sand into the finish on top, it won’t be very obvious where the sand has blown off the epoxy bottom and where it’s thick on top, you’ll just see a somewhat normal shallow sandbed. And until the flow gets so high the sand is in the water column, I should be able to crank up the pumps
