âYou think I donât see it? You think Iâm fucking dumb?â Weston looked ready to fall over, snarling himself stupid as he almost staggered into the snow bank. For every drink Adrian had consumed, her boyfriend had drank double. For the first time she found it hard to believe this man was on a fast track to political success. He would walk right out of Harvard and into the house of representatives if his father had anything to say about it. Looking at him now, she found him small and lackluster. His beautiful grey eyes sheâd thought shone like silver were now two dirty ice chips glaring over her from his deep set sockets.
She could feel her friends watching from the window. It should feel comforting, to know she had back up but instead it was a searing hot embarrassment in the base of her belly that Adrian was seeing any of this. Sheâd been doing so well. Honor Roll at Harvard was no quiet brag. She had good friends, she was well liked, sheâd landed the most eligible bachelor of her year level and now she was just another girl, letting her boyfriend speak to her like shit outside frat bar.
âI think youâre drunk,â she fixed him with a stare that dared him to progress. A warning sign that he payed no mind if he noticed at all. Sheâd been a little too forgiving she realised as they steadily approached the two minute mark. Every time he bulldozed over her feelings she had made an excuse that he just hadnât known. He would do better, he was a nice guy with poor execution. On and on it went, but she saw the actuality come clean before her own eyes. He was a rotten drunk. Some whiskey was all it took to shake the feigned niceties. The arms heâd slung around her each time they were in public were now under hind sight scrutiny; she felt irate that she hadnât scoped his pissing contest tendencies before now.
âYou fuckinâ him?â He challenged, stepping closer. She knew what he wanted in that instant, he wanted her to step back, to scramble for excuses or forgiveness. Not for fucking him, Weston knew she hadnât. She hadnât seen Adrian since theyâd met for Christâs sake, but he wanted her to surrender. He wanted an apology for making him think that she mightâve. Lissa didnât move an inch, not at the first step closer, nor the second. Instead she indignantly raised her chin to meet his eyes defiantly. If he wanted to see her cringe, heâd have to try harder. She was her fatherâs daughter after all.
âNo.â
âNo? Thatâs it? No?â
âYou really think Iâm the type to screw around behind your back?â She barely had time for him, let alone cross country hook ups. This was all so juvenile, so abstract she could laugh if she didnât want to strangle him for embarrassing herâ
âI think youâd fuck your own brother to get a leg up in this world.â Finally she recoiled, her nose wrinkled in disgust. He was getting louder and louder and people were beginning to take note of her burning cheeks. She saw a few men bristle, bouncing on the pads of their feet to decide whether or not playing hero was a good idea with the burly lacrosse player, or if it was simply easier to carry on and get some other girlâs number for the night.
âYouâre fucking disgusting, you know that. And pathetic. Are you that intimidated by him that youâll embarrass us both to make a point?â
âBy him?! Him! Donât make me fucking laugh.â
âWell maybe you should be,â It was like the little man upstairs kicked on the lights at that one. Instead of his dreary drunken gloss, his eyes lit up with a jealous anger that had him grabbing a hold of her arm, already moving towards his car. She viciously tried to unbutton her coat, praying the neanderthal hadnât noticed it was her thick sleeve heâd snared instead of her arm.
âMaybe I should. Thatâs fucking hilarious. Maybe you sho-â His words were interrupted by a thud that sounded like a boot meeting concrete. He tugged her on the way down, nearly sending her sprawling to the snow too if she hadnât steadied herself on Adrianâs arm.
His shoulders were heaving, sucking down greedy breaths to quell the rage burning up inside of him, eyes bouncing around the emptying parking lot; unsure of where to look. She could see it in his eyes he wanted to hit him again, in fact if she left them alone with no witnesses, she was certain it wouldnât stop and just one more. But he restrained himself, barely and poorly. Now looking at his feet as he waited for her vitriol to turn on him instead. She giggled, a sharp, sweet sound that lasted only a moment but she couldnât help it. He looked like a child that knew a scolding was coming and thought that he might find a way out of it if he just managed to avoid her gaze long enough. She ought to be mad, if for nothing else than to let him know she didnât need him showing up to solve every issue she had with her fists, but she wasnât. In fact, she was so utterly unperturbed by the blood spatter heâd made in off-white slush coating the lot that she stepped onto it carelessly as she reached for his hand.
Weston groaned from the ground, cupping his nose but the damage was done. As a doctor she should be repulsed. As his girlfriend, even more so. But when Adrian finally met her eyes, she laughed again, this time a little louder, a little more shameless. His face lit up in response and she felt like a child again; perhaps the only rational she could offer to her friends as to why she had ran hand in hand from the scene of the crime, giggling like grade schoolers as they went, shooting carelessly japing remarks back at her assumedly ex still struggling to find his footing.
