An exact replica of the iconic marble sculpture of the Nike of Samothrace, one of the most spectacular exhibits in the Louvre Museum, has been placed temporarily on the coastal avenue of Alexandroupolis. The exquisite, white marble sculpture will be transferred to the Greek island of Samothrace in a few months’ time.

All past negotiations with the Louvre for the return of the priceless original statue to the nation of Greece have proved fruitless, leading a local Greek official to think outside the box and come up with an acceptable alternative to the real artwork.

Dimitris Petrovic, Vice-governor of the Evros region, told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA) that he and the late regional councillor George Pavlidis decided to request two exact, 3D replicas of the statue from the Louvre.

Emory University and the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University completed a summer of excavations at the Sanctuary of Great Gods on Samothrace in northern Greece on August 8, the Greek Ministry of Culture said on Friday.

It was the first excavation session after a 22-year hiatus, focused on the stoa in the western section of the sanctuary and the monuments on the terrace it stood on, as well as on the publication of the findings.

Emory professor Bonna Wescoat is leading the team of excavators for a new five-year research project, carried out through the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and supervised by the Evros Ephorate of Antiquities.

A replica of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace, on display in the Louvre Museum in Paris, will be erected on the namesake northern Aegean island this summer.

According to the deputy regional governor of Evros, Dimitris Petrovic, the marble replica was made by three sculptors in a workshop in the northern Greek town of Drama.

Like the original, the 6.5-ton replica is 2.44 meters high.

Petrovic said that the Louvre Museum forwarded files to regional authorities containing three-dimensional depictions of the original.

An unprecedented heavy storm. Streets turned into rivers, walls in the City Hall collapsed, the Health Center and several houses and shops have been flooded and the water supply was cut when a storm hit the island of Samothraki in the Northern Aegean Sea on Monday night. Locals speak of a “biblical” disaster.

Landlsides occurred along the traffic network, the island has been divided into two after damages clocked a main road and villages in the area of Lakkoma remain isolated from the rest of the island.

A bridge on the road between Kamariotissa and Chora was swept way by the wild waters.

One can safely assume that few of the Louvre visitors who stand marveling at the Winged Victory of Samothrace prominently displayed at the Paris museum are familiar with this celebrated marble statue’s place of origin. A largely overlooked island in the northeastern Aegean, close to the coasts of both Greece and Turkey, Samothrace (or Samothraki) whose official population of 2,840 shrinks considerably in the winter, is still just a place on the map for most Greeks, despite the island’s natural charms.

Over the past couple of years, the island’s local community has joined forces with the Greek Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage and the Hellenic Cultural Center in Paris to shed light on Samothrace. “We are looking at ways to connect the Winged Victory of Samothrace with its homeland,” Thanasis Vitsas, the island’s mayor, told Kathimerini.
