âIf you like her, you sort of need to say something. The gazing isnât getting you anywhere, Henry, partly because itâs hard to see at the campfire and also, sheâs not a mind-reader,â Jed said but kindly, because Henry had a perpetually strangled look whenever the topic of Emma Green came up in the men counselorsâ cabin unless he was drunk. He could hold his liquor pretty well, so it wasnât often, but then he was moony and given to muttered curses.
âFor once, I agree with Foster. The heart-eyes thing is a dead end. Life is for living, itâs summer, weâre young and in our prime,â Byron said. âAnnie and I can save you a few rubbers, padre.â
âByron!â Henry exclaimed. The remark, delivered in Byronâs self-satisfied baritone, somehow seemed to taint what he felt for Emma. It also reminded him that he was not nearly as satisfied, though the first day of camp, Anne had made it clear she was open for an assignation; when heâd demurred, sheâd moved right on to Byron whoâd given a much different response.
âWhatâs stopping you?â Sam asked. He was the most helpful, as usual.
âI donât know,â Henry shrugged.
âYes, you do,â Jed said. âAll you do is think about this. Her. You have an answer.â
âItâs not so easy for me,â Henry said. Emma wasnât the first girl heâd ever liked but she was the first heâd liked this much. It kind of floored him how much that much actually was.
âThatâs because you wonât let it be,â Byron said. Shockingly, he let the chance to make a dirty comment about Henry being easy or hard pass right by.
âEmmaâs parents run the place,â Henry said.
âBut theyâre never here,â Jed said. âRarely. I mean, youâd think theyâd be around more but theyâre not. The supposed ghost of Camp Green Wood is here more than they are.â
âFine. She knows Iâm training to be a minister. Thatâs not a sexy profession,â Henry said. He didnât regret it, but it was true.
âYeah, âcause electrical engineer is super-hot,â Sam laughed. âAnd Fosterâs made it clear he wants to be an orthopedic surgeon. Mary canât get enough of his hip replacement pillow-talk. Tell me more about robot-assisted surgery, Jed, ooh, ooh talk trochanters to meâŚâ
âHey!â Jed interrupted.
âAt least he was basically locked up with her, alone, with nothing to interrupt them,â Henry grumbled.
âYeah, Byronâs visit was a real turn-on. I think youâre over-estimating the eroticism of the health-lodge,â Jed said. âAnd that exam table is like iron, the angles are terribleâŚâ
âOh my fucking God, stop! I like Mary and I need to be able to talk to at least one of you if I get sick or something,â Henry said. Jed made a fake-innocent face like What, what did I say? and Sam made one like Damn, Henry took the Lordâs name in vain, heâs gonna catch it with His boss and Byron just looked thoughtful, which was the most terrifying of all.
âAre you scared sheâll say no?â Byron asked. âNot to tell tales out of school, but I have it on good authority youâre in.â
âAnne thinks everyone is as⌠free as she is,â Henry said. Jed and Sam laughed. Anne was renowned for her sex-positivity and enjoyment of what she called ânature-bathsâ which featured Anne, her Union jack bikini bottom and a hammock sheâd strung up between pine trees which were equidistant between the men and womenâs cabins.
âMary says so too,â Jed remarked.
âCharlotte sounded pretty certain,â Sam added.
âDonât you guys have better things to talk about than Emma and me?â Henry snapped.
âYou admit it! You and Emma are a thing,â Jed said. âPay up, Hale!â
âNo way! That doesnât count. Iâm not giving you twenty bucks for that,â Byron said.
âYou were betting on us?â Henry asked.
âThere, you canât argue with that. âEmma and meâ and then he said âus,â thatâs a relationship,â Jed insisted.
âI bet on a hook-up, not semantics,â Hale said.
âYou wouldnât know semantics if they walked up and slapped you on the ass,â Jed said.
âSam, come on. You didnât bet, so you get to call it,â Byron said. Henry looked at Sam with gratitude and got a smile in return.
âWhatâs the point in betting on a sure thing?â Sam asked.
âTaking Haleâs money, thatâs the point,â Jed laughed.
âYou guys are shitty friends,â Henry said. He knew he sounded like a humorless jerk who was frustrated that they all had girlfriends or girl-friends-with-benefits and he didnât have the confidence, the balls to ask out the prettiest, sweetest girl heâd ever met who didnât seemed bored at all when he talked about hiking or theology school or his ranking of Pop-Tart flavors and metal bands.
âRelax, Hen. Once Byron coughs up the cash, Iâll buy us a round of glaciers and we can spike them with Byronâs vodka. A little Dutch courage and tonight could be your big night,â Jed offered.
âIâm not eating that strawberry crap you and Mary like,â Sam said. âI want green apple. Charlotte has the whole campfire set up planned.â
âAnd Sam and I learned like an entire hour of Emmaâs favorite songs. The girl likes Broadway musicals is all Iâm saying,â Jed said.
âAnd Annie and I are prepared to start up âNever Have I Everâ if we have to,â Byron said.
âIf you have toâwhat a load of BS,â Jed scoffed.
âYeah, Byron, we know how you two have been gunning to get us playing that since the second week,â Sam said.
âThat was before Mary sprained her ankle and got Jed to play doctor and Charlotte took you in hand, Sam. Annie and I thought itâd be the only way to get the party started, if you know what I mean,â Byron said, grimacing in a way he must have thought would read as sly or worldly. It looked like a bad Flynn Rider impression.
âI didnât play doctor,â Jed interrupted. âI helped take care of her ankle and then, after, I asked. Like a gentleman. I didnât literally jump her bones.â
âI know better than to argue with a smart woman,â Sam said serenely.
âYou guys are going to embarrass me. And Emma,â Henry said.
âYeah, then you can both walk off to the dock. Itâs a full moon tonight, clear skies,â said Jed. âRomantic.â
âBoathouse is stocked with blankets, some pop, some candles and Creepy Frank managed to get the night off to take Emmaâs sister to the Italian place a few towns over, so they wonât mess anything up,â Sam said.
âJesus, whatâs left for me to do?â Henry said.
âHen, if you donât know, we canât help with that. Though Annie is always ready with some pointers,â Byron said. Jed laughed and Sam smiled.
âNo, Iâm good,â Henry said quickly. âByron, give Jed the money. But skip the vodka. I donât want to be drunk for this. I donât want to miss a thing.â
