The visitors centre offers a lot of interesting information on everything about salt, its use, the work in the salt pans, etc. Don't miss it, before you walk through the salt pans. There I was attracted by the forms taken by salt emerging from water. Salins-les-Bains (FR), well known for the Great Saltworks. Tons of salt were extracted there before it’s closure in 1962. You now can visit the Salt Museum. The city itself is very cosy and there are some great hikes to Fort Belin as well as to Fort Saint André. Unfortunately both forts can’t be visited, but they have a magnificent view over the city. Especially the viewpoint at Fort St. André is really worth a visit in the dark.
