mary being like 16ish and getting an internship in the ministry as kingsley's assistant. she's very hesitant at first because she's the type of girl you'd never ever see alone, like it's her biggest fear being perceived as some kind of loser + it's harder to be confident without your friends with you, so she's nervous as hell because she's the only one who got chosen for the internship and she doesn't know what to do, making mistakes and fumbling and snapping at other interns she's not familiar with because she's embarrassed. she expects that kingsley will kick her out or at least scold her, but he's seen her record with other places and talked to her teachers before choosing her (he's very picky) so he knows this isn't what she's usually like and simply calls her into his cubicle (?) and talks to her and understands her weird insecurity about not knowing anyone at the ministry, he starts choosing her more to keep her busy &gives her more impressive jobs that have her get acquainted with officials & people in high positions of power. mary starts crushing on him harddd because he's so genuinely sweet to her and puts in effort and talks to her ffs, he's not like the guys her age who make immature jokes and then grope her when they kiss, he's sophisticated and intelligent and basically perfect. she only crushes on him more when he (implicitly) makes it very clear that nothing is ever going to happen between them (she's sixteen, he's in his mid twenties) and distances himself till she understands it because she knows men love to take advantage of young pretty girls crushing on them + even the fact that he did it implicitly instead of embarrassing her makes her feel floaty because holy shit he's so perfect. once they're both in the order she's gotten over her crush entirely but she still respects him sm
