Pairing: Stefan Salvatore/Caroline Forbes

Summary: Set during Season 2; Caroline is enrolled in Home Economics to hold on to her humanity, Stefan is enrolled in Home Economics to keep an eye on Caroline, and both of them are in way over their heads.

Author’s Note: I started writing this fic in like 2014 and weirdly got some inspiration back for it, though it’s probably going to be wildly different than I originally planned, seeing as I can’t remember what I originally planned.

Inspired by a post that I’ve since lost and can’t link, this episode of Batman Beyond, and these tags by threadsandspiderwebs. 

Canon relationships are still canon in this fic, but the focus is on Stefan/Caroline.

It was the week after her transition and the exact day of the add/drop deadline that Stefan transferred into her home economics class.

Naturally, she was suspicious.

The class wasn’t exactly filled with aspiring Martha Stewarts, minus the prison time. It mostly consisted of kids who wanted the easy A but didn’t have the talent required for art or the enthusiasm for possible limb amputation necessary for shop, with the addition of a small group of stoners who were clearly only invested in the culinary aspect of the curriculum.

Caroline had signed up for the class last semester when having more to do in the increasing amount of time her mother spent holed up in the Sheriff’s office had seemed like a good idea, before her induction into the supernatural world had necessitated the acquisition of an entirely different set of survival skills. She had stayed enrolled in the class thinking it might help keep her connected with her humanity at best and bore her to re-death at the worst.

Stefan didn’t fit in any of those categories. Still, she might have shrugged off his unexpected appearance if he hadn’t also popped up in her sections of AP European History and Honors Chemistry.

Lmao it is perfect for her and honestly I was grossed out but then I was like of course Alice still got this man’s body what else is she going to do. And plus now that Kate is gone, she really has no one to mess with so might as well talk to her dead surrogate brother.

Yep, like, let’s just check in with the two biggest moments of this. First, with Kate, we’ve got this:

Kate: It's gonna be okay. Sophie: For you. Your dad doesn't dry heave when he sees a rainbow flag. My mom calls gays degenerate sinners. Kate: We should tell the truth.

Like, Kate, I love her - I get that she was young at the time and anxious to convince Sophie - but could she take a moment to comfort Sophie when she’s telling her about this absolutely horrific and destructive environment she’s had to live with her entire life while Kate had a family that loved and validated her??? Can she empathize at all with what it must be like hearing that Sophie’s entire life?

And then with Tyler, again, this happens:

Tyler: How long? Sophie: The details don't matter. Tyler: I'm here thinking you have a bead on Batwoman's identity, and you sit me down and tell me that dating a chick almost got you expelled from military academy.

I get that he’s rightfully upset about the secrets and lies. But again somebody just jumps right over a huge, painful revelation from Sophie without offering a moment’s comfort or validation. No “I wish you had trusted me with this - I deserve the truth. You know I’d never think less of you - you didn’t do anything wrong, loving someone. But why didn’t you trust me?”

Instead “some chick almost got you expelled.”

And there’s the restaurant scene where I can get where Kate is coming from - but once again she’s completely oblivious to how Sophie is feeling. All she has is judgment that Sophie isn’t as out and proud as her and willing to engage in a stand-off in public on a moment’s notice.

<3 It’s totally valid for people to want Kate to have a more fun, fantasy ship with someone like Julia -- it’s not to my taste but it’s a valid aesthetic preference-- but I am just absolutely moved by Sophie and the fact that they’re trying to talk about wlw and our complex realities. Complex and painful and we can’t all be Kate; we don’t all have her resources. Or her accepting parents.
