What is a safe learning environment?
A safe learning environment is one where you know the answers to the following questions:
· Where are the fire exits and what are the evacuation procedures?
· What personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided in the workplace; how and when is it used? (PPE are items such as gloves, eye protection, ear muffs etc.)
· What are workplace hazards and could my training sessions create these?
· What equipment do I need to use when I am training and how do I use it correctly and safely?
To create a safe learning environment, talk to the workplace supervisor or manager where you will be delivering the training and discuss the answers to these questions. Â Talk with your learners to determine if they have any special needs that may impact on your ability to provide a safe learning environment. Â For example, a learner may have a physical disability which may prevent them from operating certain machinery to the required specifications or may need regular breaks to administer medication.
Once you have established your learner’s needs and are able to confirm you can provide a safe learning environment, the next step in organising your training is to gain an understanding of what is to be achieved.
What are the objectives of the training?
By this stage you will know why you need to provide training within the workplace, this may include:
·           introducing a new procedure
·           inducting or showing new employees work skills or tasks
·           using a new piece of equipment.
Determining the content and requirements of a learning program.
However, you may need to confirm what the content and requirements of the learning program are. Â These may include:
·           competencies to be achieved (such as a benchmark or standard)
·           generic and job-role specific skills, which may be:
o  set by the organisation
o  developed by an employee
o  discussed and agreed upon by an individual or group (group objectives)
o  expected learning outcomes.
