you didn't remember closing your eyes , whatever material that giant cruise lounge bean bag was made of, it has to been laced with melatonin.
the rest of the group had gradually dispersedâsome heading back to the pool, others raiding the ship's soft-serve machine.but miles hadn't moved an inch.
sitting in the chair next to you, he kept watch like a self-appointed bodyguard, his eyes never straying far from your face. this was the first time he'd seen you completely vulnerable, stripped of your usual flustered blushes and quick-witted comebacks. you looked so peaceful, your chest rising and falling in a slow, steady rhythm as you let sleep take you a stray french curl grazed your cheek.
slowly, deliberately, he abandoned his chair and sank onto the edge of the massive bean bag himself. the material shifted quietly under his weight, but you didn't stir; his heart hammered against his ribs desperately wanting to pull you against his chest, but he held back. Instead, he settled for something gentler. with agonizing slowness, miles reached out, his long fingers carefully gathering your braids from your neck and back. noticed some pieces started to frizz under the friction of lying on the suede material. a soft, ridiculous smile tugged at his lips. taking three sections and beginning to weave them into an incredibly messy and clumsy braid. trying his absolute best to make sure your hair wouldn't get tangled while you slept.
when a low, groggy murmur escaped your lips, miles immediately froze, his thumbs still holding the end of the braid.
your eyes blinked once, the bright lounge lights making you wince; your brain was fried. where am i? who am i ?
"morning" a low, amused voice rumbled right next to your ear. you blinked once more , your vision cleaning to find miles sitting right over you. fond expression that he probably didn't know he was making. : did you hibernate well?"
"mmm.." you hummed attempting to get the sleepiness out of your vocal cords as you pushed yourself upright. completely unaware of the braid cascading down your right shoulder. " i need to use the bathroom.' you announced sleepily.
"go ahead, " miles chuckled his eyes dancing with mischief and underlying piride. " check the mirror while you're in there."
confused, you stumbled into the lounge bathroom. expecting to be met with a marker mustache or a poorly drawn male genitalia... the second you looked in the glass, you gasped mentally. right there was a very lopsided, hilariously loose braid holding your hair together. it looked a little ridiculous, but the messy look was kinda cute on you, or maybe because he did that, a massive, uncontrollable smile broke across your face.
you walked back out. pointing an accusing but grateful finger at him. "you touched my hair."
"yeah." he shrugged, acting like he wasn't beaming right now he plopped down on the bean bag, right where you just were , feeling the warmth you left over. "you gonna take it out or..?" he questioned, looking over at you, his eyes wide and puppy-like.
"mmm..no ill keep it." you said carelessly " i appreciate your hard work." you cooed jokingly.
"tuh- you better. lucky i didn't charge." he commented slickly.
"charge me for a service i didn't ask for?" you countered.
he waved his hand at you dismissively "that's not the point."
you tilted your head at him before making your way onto the ban bag again. "you stole my spot." you sighed as you looked over at him, he was very relaxed. "its yours?" he asked, feigning innocence, looking up at you with a soft smirk fighting to reveal itself.
your lips pursed and eyes squinted in fake annoyance. "yes. yes it is."
"so take it , cmon." he teased boldly , patting his hand on his chest like you were some cat he was waiting to pet.
you scoffed, reaching to smack the side of his head, but he caught it just as quickly as you thought to hit him. with that very hand, he tugged you forward, pulling a yelp out of you and a giggle out of him as his chest met with yours.
as you guys started walking through the carpeted hallway to meet up with the others at the food court, the silence between you felt heavyâ charged with everything that had happened in the closet and on that bean bag. miles shoved his hands into his shorts pockets, clearing his throat awkwardly. he was so nervous.
"soo , uh .." miles tarted , his eyes darting around the hallway before just landing on you. "aboutâlikeâearlier, in the room and, the other day... i just wanted to clear things up? I mean, i don't want to make things weirdâi want to take things slow, but i also really like you i thinkâ"
"ahânoâomg. i know i like you i just don't want you to think i'm just messing aroundâ" he was rambling, tripping over his words in the sweetest way possible his cheeks painted a crimson red under his brown flesh.
you chuckled shaking your head in amusement. "miles, its fine , we'll talk about it later okay? when you've collected your thoughts."
the subtle promise in your voice left him completely dazed, a hopeful smirk spreading across his face as you pushed open the food court doors " right, okay." he said with a relieved sigh.
"finally!" naomi declared, adjusting her sunglasses. but before she could even ask her fifty rehearsed questions after seeing you two come out of the closet together, her eyes shifted to the side of your head. she blinked, squinting. "wait...since when did you learn how to braid? who taught you? thats cuteee."
you froze your hand instantly flying to touch your hair. sure enough your fingers brushed against the messy braid " i..don't?" your eyes widening as your brain reminding you that you in fact, didn't braid your hair and that it was miles and you completely forgot to undo it. "oh my god." naomi whispered , leaning across the table. "okay that's no important." she shook off before sitting directly next to you " what was going on in that closet???"
"okay so-.." you began, debating if you still wanted to keep this little secret just between you and miles or finally have someone to talk to about this. "we kissed." you blurted in a whisper.
"no way." naomi said surprised, not really- she's been shipping you two but she wasn't sure something was gonna actually happen...
"are you guys like... what? a thing or just fooling around?" she whispered excitedly
"i dont know!" you whispered back in a giggle. "we didn't have that conversation yet."
your millionth virgin pina colada's were forgot on the picnic tables as you two debriefed like never before , soon enough it was breaching 7pm
"guys i am BORED." samira exclaimed to the group.
"we should do that yoga thingy , it's in 30 minutes," naomi suggested.
"oh nowww you want to do it" mateo rolled his eyes playfully.
"i'm just saying, we could go not that we absolutely have to go." naomi countered.
miles head swooshed from side to side ti whoever was talking until his eyes landed on you. " do you wanna go?" he asked to you and only you.
"uhmmm, sounds cool." you said simply.
"cool?" he repeated. "alright. lets go." he said raising his voice before tugging your hand towards the elevators.
the cruise staff instructors was at the front of the sand, speaking in a clam , soothing voice about aligning your chakras, but two rows back miles' chakras were in absolutely shambles
he has manuved his bright blue yoga mat so it was right next to yours, practically overlapping edges. mateo , samira , and naomi were feet away . mateo already complaining loudly about his tight hamstrings making everyone else erupt in kind laughter, giving miles just enough cover to talk without the whole ship hearing.
"alright everyone." the instructor chimed over the portable speaker. "lets start in a simple seated twist. right hand on your left knee, inhale deeply, and twist your torso."
you followed instructions, twisting away from miles. the second you did , you felt a poke against your shoulder.
"pssst! hey." miles whispered intensely, twisting his own body so he was facing toward the back of your head. "hey. are you ignoring me?"
"miles. im trying to align my spine," you hissed back , attempting to keep a straight face while naomi threw you a hilarious 'is he serious?' look for her mat.
"my spine is fine, okay? what's not fine is my heart rate." miles muttered, leaning his upper body as close to your mat as humanly possible without tipping over. his voice dropped to that lower, raspy register that always made your chest feel funny. " i'm literally bursting over here! i can't do forty-five minutes of breathing exercises and yoga when i haven't finished what i was saying to you."
the instructor called out for a transition into a low lunge. as you both stepped one foot toward the sand, miles wobbly matched your pose, his hand shaking slightlyânot from the stretch but from pure nerves.
"look," miles began, his eyes locked onto yours, completely abandoning any attempt at looking at the instructor. the cocky, teasing grin was gone, replaced by a raw, earnest look that made your breath hitch. " i don't just want to keep having these... random, insane moments in closets or in pools late at night and then pretend like my brain isn't fried for the rest of the day. I want to actually be a thing. with you. like, officially."
your foot slipped a little in the loose sand, your heart doing a wild backflip " milesâ"
"im serious!" he whispered urgently, holding his lunge like a champ, though his leg was definitely starting to wobble. "and I know I can be annoying, and I know I ramble, but I'm trying to be good at this, okay? I want to know what you likeâor don't like so i canâ not do those things and you like me."
he paused, a sudden, bright blush spreading from his cheeks all the way to the tips of his ears as he lowered his voice even further, leaning over his knee toward you.
"like... the kissing," he stammered, his eyes dropping shamelessly to your lips for a second before flicking back to your eyes. "was that... okay? do you like when I take initiative like that, or do you want me to ask first? because I swear I will ask every single time if that makes you comfortable, or I'll wait for you to pull me in, orâ"
"now, transition slowly into downward facing dog," the instructor's peaceful voice cut through the air.
you instantly flipped over into the pose, putting your head between your arms to hide the absolute nuclear explosion of a blush on your face.
Miles, refusing to let it go, popped up into his own downward dog right beside you. you peeked sideways under your arm, only to find miles staring right back at you upside down, looking ridiculous but utterly determined.
"I'm serious, y/n " his upside-down face murmured, his voice strained from holding his weight on his hands. "I'm crazy about you. and I want to get it right. so... are we a thing or am I just doing beach yoga for my health?"
a breathless, helpless laugh bubbled up out of your chest. even upside down, with sand sticking to his knees and his hair falling everywhere, he was the sweetest, most infuriating guy you'd ever met.
"we're a thing, you idiot," you whispered back, holding his gaze.
the way his upside-down face instantly lit up with pure, unadulterated joy made every butterfly in your stomach go wild. He tried to celebrate by doing a quick fist-pump, immediately lost his balance, and face-planted directly into the sand getting a gasp from people nearby.
"i'm good!" miles choked out instantly, pushing himself up covered in sand, a massive, dazed grin plastered across his face. "totally meant to do that!"
after miles aggressively brushed the sand off his face and sat back up, the instructorâs soothing voice drifted over the speaker again.
"great energy, everyone! for our final series, we are going to explore some restorative balance work. you can do these individually, or if you have someone next to you, feel free to turn this into a partner pose to help stabilize each other."
miles didn't even let the instructor finish the sentence. the second the word partner left her mouth, he practically threw himself off his mat, sliding over until he was sitting right in front of you on yours. "well hey."
"you didn't even ask if i wanted a partner," you teased, trying to fight the smile tugging at your own lips.
"Itâs literally in the job description. I have to protect you from falling into the sand." he explained.
"yeah because you're great at that" you joked.
across the way, mateo let out a loud, theatrical groan. "bro, are you serious? we're supposed to be finding inner peace!"
"my inner peace is right here, mateo, mind your business!" miles called back shamelessly, not taking his eyes off you for a single second. naomi gave you a subtle thumbs-up behind his back , looking like a proud mom.
"alright, partners," the instructor directed, blissfully unaware of the teenage drama two rows back. "sit face-to-face, bring the soles of your feet together, and reach forward to grab each other's wrists to gently pull into a seated forward fold."
you both moved into the pose, your bare feet pressing against his. When Miles reached out, he didn't just grab your wristsâhe slid his long fingers down into your palms, lacing his fingers through yours instead.
"miles," you whispered, your face burning as he gently pulled you forward. "She said wrists."
"I like this better," he murmured, his voice dropping into that low, sweet tone that completely undone you. he leaned in closer as you both folded forward, his face just inches from yours, his gaze dropping shamelessly to your lips. "besides, I'm just making sure you don't slip. very serious safety precaution." he corrected instantly, leaning in just a fraction of an inch closer, his eyes dancing with pure, unfiltered affection. "so... since we're officially a thing... am i allowed to kiss you again as soon as this class ends, or do I have to submit a formal application?"
you bit your lip, tilting your head at him. "depends. are you going to face-plant in the sand again?"
"will that get me a pity kiss?"
the sun was starting to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and pink by the time the beach yoga class finally wrapped up.
you were brushing sand off your legs when your phone buzzed in your hand.
dad: hey kiddo! were heading ti this restaurant for din-din in 20! come back to the suite to get ready! + dessert if we convince your mom...
you sighed, a tiny wave of disappointment hitting you. you loved your family and always looked forward to dinner with them, but you were having so much fun with everyoneâespecially now that things were official with miles.
"everything okay?" Miles asked, immediately picking up on your shift in mood as he slung his towel over his shoulder.
"yeah," you said softly, looking up at him. "my dad just texted. I have to go back to my suite so we can go out to dinner." milesâs face instantly dropped into the most dramatic, adorable sad-puppy pout youâd ever seen. "already? But we just became a thing."
then, a sudden realization seemed to hit him. the hesitant, secretive guy from yesterday was officially gone. he didn't have to hide how crazy he was about you anymore.
without warning, miles stepped right into your space, cupped the side of your face, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss right against your cheek.
behind you, the entire group erupted.
mateo let out a loud, obnoxious wolf-whistle, while naomi started clapping like a madwoman. a few of the other girls in the group, who hadn't known what went down in the storage closet earlier, gasped in shock before bursting into excited squeals.
"OKAY, OFFICIAL!" one of the girls cheered.
"look at Romeo over here!" mateo hollered, tossing a wadded-up towel at milesâs head, which miles caught dodged without taking his eyes off you.
miles just smirked, completely unbothered by the teasing. he reached down and slid his long fingers through yours, locking his hand securely into yours right in front of everyone.
"come on," he murmured softly, giving your hand a gentle squeeze. "I'm walking you back."
the walk to your cruise suite was pure bliss. miles was practically glowing, shamelessly holding your hand the entire way down the carpeted hallways he could skip if he didn't care about looking like a complete dork.
"so," miles started, swinging your joined hands gently between you two. "since we have to share you with your family tonight... can I take you out tomorrow? just the two of us? a proper date."
Your heart did a happy little flip. "a proper date?"
"yeah," Miles said, leaning in slightly as you walked. "we can grab dinner at that nice Italian spot on Deck 5, and then go down to the beach deck to watch the stars. no mateo, no yoga, just us."
"I would love that," you smiled, blushing up at him.
by the time you reached the double doors of your family's suite, miles still hadn't let go of your hand.
before you could swipe your keycard, the suite door swung open. your dad was standing right there, adjusting his watch, while your mom was inside grabbing her purse.
"hey, kiddo, perfect timingâ" your dad started, before his eyes immediately dropped to your interlocked hands.
Miles didn't panic. Instead, he stood up straighter, flashed a warm, incredibly polite smile, and offered his free hand to your dad.
"Hi, Mr. and Mrs ! I'm miles," he introduced himself smoothly, his voice confident and respectful. "I just wanted to make sure she made it back to the room safely before your family dinner."
your parents were completely caught off guard, but milesâs charm worked instantly. your dad shook his hand with an approving nod, and your mom practically beamed, immediately taking a liking to his polite, gentle demeanor.
"well, thank you, Miles! thatâs very sweet of you," your mom said, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
"of course," miles smiled. then, completely lost in the high of the afternoon and forgetting for a brief, glorious second that your parents were standing two feet away, Miles turned to you.
He leaned in and pressed a sweet, tender kiss directly onto your lips. "I'll text you later, beautiful."
The second his lips left yours, reality crashed over him like an ice-cold wave.
miles froze, his eyes widening in pure horror as he remembered where he was. He slowly turned his head to look at your parents.
Your mom and dad were standing there completely speechless, their jaws practically on the floor.
"IâshitâI mean, sir, ma'am, I am so sorry, I didn't mean toâ" ,miles stammered, his face turning a shade of red that rivaled a tomato as he backed away, completely tripping over his tongue. "i'll go now! have a great dinner!"
he turned on his heel and practically sprinted down the hallway, leaving you dying of laughter.
you looked over at your parents, expecting a lecture, but your mom just clasped her hands together with a huge, proud grin, while your dad let out a soft chuckle, shaking his head. they weren't mad at allâif anything, they were thrilled to see you so happy, thriving, and living your best life on this trip
"well," your dad teased, opening the door wider. "he seems polite. now go get changed, sweetheart, before your boyfriend comes back!"
