Sade Murphy
Describe yourself as a poet in three words:
sure, curious, hedonistic.
What is your chief misery as a poet:
I think that I'm slow on the uptake. I prefer to consume things slowly, to process them slowly... well in comparison to the rest of the world that is. I'm really about going my own way, going at my own speed. Also I'm sometimes afraid that my poetry is very self centered.
What you appreciate the most in a poem:
Tightness, torque, twerk. Poetry so right it makes me a little ill, it makes me need endless consecutive naps to recover. Poetry located in the body, poems that forcefully make themselves at home in my own body.
If not a poet, what would you be?
Okay, even thinking of being anything but a poet gives me the beginnings of a panic attack. But if I had to imagine myself doing anything else I would say tattoo artist... no I'm not sure I could do that. I would want to do what Neil deGrasse Tyson does. Astrophysicist? I would basically just want to spend all day talking about the stars and the planets and the question "Why?"
Who is your poetry hero and why?
Maya Angelou. She was the first poet I ever read who made me feel like who I was, my thoughts and feelings, the things I experienced were important. I read her autobiography when I was in the sixth grade and began to write poetry after that. She was black and a woman and she'd experienced poverty and abuse, she hadn't made all of the traditional "right" choices in her life. But she was powerful, confident, influential. It made me immeasurably sad when she died last year.
What is your idea of happiness?
Being high with someone(s) I adore and either sitting still enough to feel sounds vibrate against and within my body or talking and talking for hours about all the ideas I've ever had... there's no urgency or anything to be afraid of. And even if I'm embarrassing myself I still feel good because I'm just being myself without having to think about it.
What is your present state of mind?
Uneasy.
Your favorite poem, ever:
This is too difficult... but I'll choose one by Maya Angelou, my favorite of hers. I think it's the only poem that I know by heart. "On Diverse Deviations"
When love is a shimmering curtain
Before a door of chance
That leads to a world in question
Wherein the macabrous dance
Of bones that rattle in silence
Of blinded eyes and rolls
Of thick lips thin, denying
A thousand powdered moles,
Where touch to touch is feel
And life is weary whore
I would be carried off, not gently
To a shore,
Where love is the scream of anguish
And no curtain drapes the door.
