"Calls Me Home" Dean Winchester Feels
Human!Cas in the Bunker
Human!Cas is nothing if not sincere and he honestly and truly believes that the Winchester boys are going to be of great service to him in learning exactly what it means and how to be human. And, sure, Dean cannot help but be pleased by this because, well, when has Dean ever been more than just barely adequate? He believes himself to be what no one should care to emulate, not as a son, brother, or friend. And while Cas’ actions in the past have screamed of validation of Dean “guy with a GED and a give-em-hell attitude” Winchester, here Cas is—-lost, vulnerable, and afraid—-and trusting Dean to be enough. His best friend, his own savior, needs him, wants to be like him. Most importantly, he will actually stay this time and maybe, just maybe, they can build a life together. So sure, maybe the elder Winchester finds a thrill at this prospect, and Dean silently thanks Cas for remembering to fashion back his many freckles while gripping him tight and raising him from perdition; right now, those freckles are the only thing hiding the pleased redness from spreading across his face.
And so they would stay like that in the bunker, Team Free Will whole and intact for the first time possibly ever, and he would teach Cas the various ins-and-outs of everyday human mundanity: Dean would, with uncharacteristic patience, for the 5th damn time explain to Cas how to hard-boil an egg because the fallen angel had inexplicably acquired a taste for runny egg salad sandwiches——which, Dean also, quite graciously, did not point out made the whole kitchen smell like a demon locker room; together, they would solve Cas’ great mystery of how to teeth brush and it would fast became one of Cas’ (but definitely not Dean’s, because that would be weird, right?) favorite activities to do together; Dean would go with Cas to his first real hair cut because “no way are you ever, ever getting the Sam-flop on my watch”; he would show Cas how to make the bed the right way—-military-grade style—- for ultimate long sleepage, although, Dean had not really gotten that since he was 4 years old; Dean would finally explain, with only a little teasing, why sheep were the preferred animal when sleep counting (“umm, they are kinda fluffy, like a pillow maybe? And like your completely ridiculous hair in the morning?); most importantly, he would run into Cas’ room when he heard screaming and would gently wrestle a shaking, sobbing Cas into his chest; he would stroke his hands comfortingly through Cas’ hair, just the way Dean’s mother used to do to him, while Cas would repeat, brokenly, “My wings, Dean, I cant feel my wings”; that night would be the night that Dean would decide to move Cas into his room so that he would not have to run so far the next time to reach Cas. It is because Dean knows, perhaps better than anyone, that the only way to pull a person back from that ledge was by someone who lives there too.
The saddest human/inanimate object moment in all of tv-dom
