' FAMILY REQUIRES SACRIFICES. '
as someone who has seen a lot of gross movies and considers themselves to be pretty desensitized to gore in films, the philippou brothers never cease to prove me otherwise. while i would not say this is a violent movie or a gory movie, what little bloody content there is packs such a punch that it left me physically shaking with nervousness and hiding behind the sleeves of my sweater so i wouldn't have to see the viscerally nauseating acts the characters were playing out. i am incredibly perturbed by the treatment of disabled characters in this film, not their treatment by the writers but their treatment by the other characters; the way one of the main characters' visual impairment is used to keep her out of the loop and docile, completely unaware to the insane things being done by the people she should consider as family was genuinely horrifying to see. this movie deals with grief and abuse and loss and disability and family in such an interesting way and it has left me feeling emotions i can't name, but needless to say that they are very strong emotions. i will be thinking about this movie for a very long time.
