She took a sip from her tea and looked out of the window of her apartment, the newspaper laying in front of her. It was nice here. High up, big ceiling, still very cosy. Her home was, as Rumi jokingly referred to it, her dragon cave where she could overlook everything and still curl herself up, seeing everything but not be seen. Cue to the mirrored windows.
Her friendship with the rather feral woman surprised many who first learned of it, which elicited a delightful cackle from Rumi every time she witnessed it. ‘The feral rabbit and the calm beast’, as some people jokingly referred to them.
Ryuko, or her hero persona, Ryukyu, was always a calm, collected presence in every meeting and every situation. She was one of the dependable heroes, the ones you loved to have around in a crisis. Nothing about her suggested hot-headedness, or recklessness, or even just a loud mouth. She was a leader with a natural authority that wasn’t in the least diminished by her soft spot for her interns and other children under her watch or the humility she liked to carry herself with.
Well.
That was what the public knew.
Which was probably a good thing. Nobody wanted the terrifying dragon lady to also have a personality matching her beastly form. It was enough that people stayed aware that Ryuko could eat them with a bite, if she wanted to. And even that was something they sometimes seemed to forget, too lost in the picture of the hero they had in mind to recognize the predator in their middle.
Ryuko liked it like that.
It hadn’t always been like that. It was a good thing that the publics memory didn’t extend too far, since her early hero days were – well. Let’s say she and Rumi got along as a house on fire, much to the great worries of a lot of people.
In her early days she had been much more conflict-happy, had never even thought about backing down from any fight thrown her way.
It was bit different today. Experience shapes. She still would fight every fight she picked up, but she knew enough to know how to pick her battles.
Maybe watching over the two of her friends with absolutely no self-preservation had done the trick to calm her down so considerably. Someone had to have the common sense in this group and her friends certainly did not. Sometimes Ryuko thought it to be a miracle they were alive at all.
There had been one very noticeable incident in her past though, just as she had been starting to gain some attention and rose rather quickly in the ranks. People liked her and she liked her people, plus she had the abilities to back everything up she said and did – which was in her opinion a good trait to have. It garnered her the attention of the HSPC, making them have a closer look at her, observing, judging, monitoring her every move – or short: The commission had decided to become interested in a new coming hero.
Which is never a good thing.
Having attention on me, I mean.
Especially not the attention of the commission.
She picked up the newspaper once more, the front page all about the Hero Billboard chart that had happened yesterday. Ryuko was glad not to be the talk of the day, everybody focused on Hawks, that reckless idiot, and Endeavour, their new number one. She wasn’t one for the limelight. She actually avoided it when possible. She just happened to be several meters tall when carrying out her heroic duties, which was rather detrimental when trying to stay under the radar.
As she reminisced about her earlier days, she thought back to the incident that had caused her current standing and allowed her to operate as she did – a top ten hero free from many of the bothersome burdens of the commission.

Previously on BnHA: Gigantomachia, who had done nothing but mindlessly rampage about for the past few chapters, to the point where I honestly forgot that he was actually a sentient thinking person and not just a big dumb pokemon, suddenly became strangely chatty and very calculatingly homicidal, and nearly killed poor Mina. Thankfully Kiri dove in and stopped her from being squished by him which WOULD HAVE SUCKED A LOT, and to make a long story short he successfully fed Machia the sedative, which he technically did with Mina’s help, so it was technically a tag team effort, if a bit of a controversial one! But anyway, so Machia was all “itadakimasu”, and hopefully he’ll finally go to sleep soon now that everyone’s favorite Guy We’ve Heard A Lot About But Have Never Seen In Action, Majestic, is also on the scene! The chapter ended with Tomura weirdly monologuing about his dad right in front of Endeavor while possibly turning into a big moth monster. I’m not really sure lol. We’ll see where this goes.
Today on BnHA: Would you believe me if I told you that the pro heroes found a way to fuck it all up again. Would that surprise you in any kind of way. I’m sorry, were you expecting Endeavor’s attempt to light Tomura on fire to be any more effective the seventh time around? If at first you don’t succeed, right. Were you expecting Tomura to suddenly become less unkillable than he’s been for the past dozen chapters. Were you expecting them to not stand around for pages on end listening to him rant and watching him grow more Transcendent by the second and doing absolutely nothing about it. What manga have you been reading. Well let me just tell you, they certainly do fuck it up. And Gran Torino is probably more paste now than man, but the dust hasn’t cleared yet so that angst is on hold till a later date! Right now we have more pressing things to deal with, like the fact that Tomura finally remembered he has Quirk-Be-Gone bullets in his pocket, and is FINALLY PULLING THEM OUT, and so alas, the time has finally come for A CERTAIN SOMEONE TO LOSE THEIR QUIRK LIKE I’VE BEEN SAYING THIS WHOLE TIME, and in related news I am seriously considering booking an Airbnb cabin somewhere in the woods with no internet service just so I can avoid spoilers next week sob.
y’all. trying to avoid spoilers every week is such a futile goddamn exercise lol. I am genuinely curious what his thought process is here. these are some VERY strange neurons to be firing right now. boy are you all right
anyway so here are some panels of the heroes not finishing Tomura off, which is apparently their specialty. I like the part where RockLockRock is pointing in a completely different direction. and he’s making it out like heroes just ignore any problems that they can’t fix, and “silently sweep the filth of society under the rug.” and he has a point of course. but it would sound much more convincing not coming from a guy whose apparent solution to this problem is “just kill everyone.” like, my dude. I don’t think your particular political platform is the revolutionary answer we’ve all been seeking here
anyway so this is all probably resonating more with some readers than others. myself, I don’t think “ALL HEROES ARE GARBAGE SCUM” is the logical conclusion to be drawn from the whole “society has some problems that we really need to look at” thing, and I don’t think scrapping the entire system is somehow the only viable resolution here. the whole League/PLF argument essentially seems to be that because heroes are not perfect, they should completely be eliminated. which to me is akin to saying that because your house has a leaky roof, you need to tear the whole thing down and never build another house again because houses are inherently flawed. when it’s more like, okay you definitely do need to fix the roof because that can lead to mold and rotting wood and electrical problems and shit, but you don’t necessarily need to tear the whole place down. and even if you do, there’s nothing stopping you from building another, better house using the knowledge you obtained from your experience with the first one! and also, the one thing you definitely do not need to do under any circumstances is to tear down the house, and then go and murder everyone in your town...?? like, those two things don’t connect at all??? ???
anyways so yeah. I know he’s a traumatized little bugger so I don’t hold it against him too much, but this is basically the kind of thought train I start having whenever one of these guys starts monologuing like this. but anyway let’s read on
okay so the next page is basically a flashback to him wandering around the streets in his bare feet covered in blood as a five-year-old child, and everyone proceeding to ignore the shit out of him! which, yeah, that was pretty fucked up! and is still one of the few things I don’t agree with this series about at all. like, I could definitely see as many as 95% of the passerby ignoring him in favor of being shitty people who turn a blind eye to anything that might inconvenience them. but I don’t agree with every single person ignoring him even though he is right there. “don’t agree” as in I don’t think it would actually happen that way, I should clarify. and I just don’t like the implied message this seems to convey. Mr. Rogers doesn’t agree with it either! but okay whatever, for the purposes of the story I’ll accept it as is, and it certainly does serve as an excellent foundation for Tomura’s complete nihilism and lack of faith in humanity’s... well, humanity

by the way, because I can already imagine people drawing the obvious parallels to the real life problems the U.S. and many other countries are facing with systemic racism and rampant corruption in law enforcement, I’m just gonna take a moment and say I don’t think the situations are exactly the same, although we certainly have seen some troubling things in BnHA particularly on the law enforcement side (Twice acquiring a criminal record at age 16 -- and for that matter, him being an orphaned 16-year-old who didn’t seem to have any kind of support from anyone?? -- because someone stepped in front of his bike comes to mind). and they’ve definitely got their share of shady government biz as well with the HPSC and their fun child soldiers programs. the thing is, though, that Tomura and Stain and the PLF never seem to address these specific problems, and instead for some reason jump straight to the heroes somehow being at the root of all this. idk. to me it doesn’t make sense. but anyways
okay but something is DEFINITELY going on with this kid at this point lol
