G. Glad You Gave This Book A Chance

A few different options: 

The POV switching in Traci Chee’s We Are Not Free was at first a little jarring, especially because I focus quite a lot on character when I’m reading, but the story is really beautiful and heartbreaking and well done, and I’m glad I stuck with it.

While reading You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle, I literally said aloud, “This is so miserable, I don’t know how she’s going to turn it around and make this couple cute or even likeable,” but she did it.

I hadn’t been super into the Grisha trilogy, but Six of Crows was so highly recommended that I gave it a shot. A good choice: it deserves the hype! 

N. Number of Bookcases You Own

I actually own four, including a little cube shelf, two and a half of which are completely filled. (There are also the three in my bedroom at my parents’ house, but I don’t think they count.)

Prologue: Describe the book you are currently reading using only emojis?

Oooh, fun! I just finished a book and haven’t started a new one yet, so I’ll do my immediate previous: 🌊🏴‍☠️🧙🏾‍♀️🧜‍♀️👭 (The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall)

Ooh I was missing two of my adult teeth too (they ended up pulling my baby teeth though and doing a lot of complicated stuff with my braces to close the gaps). I’ve never met anyone else outside my family with the same quirk.

12. Do you need to finish a book before you can move on to the next one, or will you have multiple books going at once?

I can definitely read multiple books at once, and that’s especially true when I might need to read in different ways - usually if I have a physical book, an ebook, and an audiobook, they’re not the same one, I’m just taking advantage of the convenience of each. But I’m very goal oriented, very much love checking things off a list, so given a choice, I like to read a book through. (This year, I’ve decided to try to give up books that I’m not connecting with instead of just pushing through so I can say I’ve finished. I haven’t been very successful in the first two weeks, though, oops.)

13. How do you chose which book to read next?

I have a list! Overall, it’s a mix of books I’ve seen positively reviewed by readers I like and trust, those that catch my eye in professional journals, new and prepublication YA/middle grade, plus, this year, books that came out between about 2010 and 2015 which was the period just before I became a librarian.

16. What’s your favourite of Shakespeare’s plays?

Okay, here’s a big ol’ “world’s worst English major” confession: I haven’t read much Shakespeare! I was set to take an entirely Shakespeare-focused class in college, but the first play we read was Titus Andronicus and it was so gruesome that I switched to something else. If I’m put to it, I have to go with a comedy but (world’s worst English major again!) of those I’ve only actually read Midsummer Night’s Dream. Plotwise, probably Twelfth Night or Much Ado, though.

17. What's a movie you saw recently that you liked?

Furiosa was definitely worth seeing in a theater, even if it wasn't quite the revelation that Fury Road was.

18. Pro or anti tchotchkes?

Extremely pro. There are tchotchkes on my desk I've had since elementary school! Boyfriend recently started asking about some of their origins, there are so many—although there's not really any lore so much as details on where each came from. But I love them.

30. How many pairs of scissors do you own?

2. Best place you traveled to in your country?

Arches National Park was pretty terrific. Also the inside of any Broadway theater.

5. Coolest country you have ever visited?

Iceland!
