Despite how much I like 00s and 2010s pop, there are a few bands and artists I forgot about, one of which being OneRepublic. I know of OneRepublic, and I’ve heard a few of their albums; I picked up 2013’s Native last summer, and I didn’t really care for it. They went into a more pop direction, but to be fair, frontman Ryan Tedder was becoming a pop songwriter powerhouse. He helped propel Maroon 5 to the stratosphere with 2012’s Overexposed, as well as his own band. Their debut album, 2007’s Dreaming Out Loud, introduced the band to the world, especially with the hit single “Apologize.” I know that song, but I don’t think I’ve heard the whole album. I do remember picking up their second album, 2009’s Waking Up, and I remember not being a huge fan of it. I liked it okay, but I just never got into Tedder’s voice. He’s not a flat vocalist, per se, but he’s kind of boring, which reflects their sound as well; they’re just not a super interesting band,
I ended up finding a copy of Waking Up at a local Goodwill a couple days back; I wasn’t sure if I should get it, but I usually grab anything that isn’t crappy Christian music at Goodwill, especially if it’s in good shape. The disc was a bit scratched, but it wasn’t in horrible shape, so I thought I’d get it. I’m not the biggest fan of these guys, but what’s the worst that could happen for $1.59? Honestly, nothing at all, because this album isn’t actually half bad. It’s better than I remember, but it’s not an album that I’m dying to go back to. The big single from this was “Good Life,” and it’s a catchy little pop-rock song, but the rest of the album is kind of repetitive and derivative. They do experiment with some other sounds, such as cinematic strings and theatrics, as well as more synth-driven songs, but I’m not all that crazy about it.
I think it comes down to Tedder being a boring vocalist; he isn’t bad, per se, but man, he’s so boring. He just doesn’t have a commanding voice, and you kind of need that in pop music, but his voice just doesn’t do much for me. The lyrics really don’t, either; the album is supposedly about waking up from a bad dream, as well as things like struggling with fame, relationships, and things like that, but I’m not totally into it. The lyrics aren’t absolute trash, but they’re not super interesting, either; if anything, I’m just bored by the lyrics, as well as the whole album. Waking Up is fine, but it’s a boring and “safe” pop-rock album that sounds of its time. I never got that much into OneRepublic, and revisiting this, I remember why.
