RV04!
The Silverstone RV04 was finally revealed today! Although I am pleased that I can finally look upon it, I am a little worried about the case itself. Firstly Silverstone has eliminated the classic 90 degree motherboard turn! This was part of what made 1-3 so special so that was defiantly a disappointment. However the motherboard has been flipped upside-down instead. This means that the motherboard faces the right rather than the left, which might be a big factor for some people but not for me. Externally I love the look of the case. I was worried about the ridges on the front before but now that I see the way the full case looks it works. Also the side mounted USB 3.0 ports are really neat since I hate seeing those two on the front of cases and the previous solution of a lid was a little messy. I could not find a photo with the side panel showing but I hope it has a window so I can take advantage of my RGB strips. If not I may have to cut one myself.
Excitement building!
I haven't posted in a while so there are a couple things to cover. Firstly my graphics card and ram arrived! That meant I had all the parts needed to do a test boot. With the help of a friend of mine we hooked everything up to my TV and it worked! Here's a photo of us taking apart the build: (Sorry I didn't get a chance to take photos of the build process)
Everything went pretty smoothly. The CPU instillation was much easier than I imagined and the CPU fan took no effort at all. The wire connecting the CPU fan to the motherboard bothers me a little but that's about it. The only other issue we ran into was that the motherboard had no power button so I had to contact two pins. I used an x-acto knife which was probably not the best idea since at one point a rather alarming spark was generated. Also the returned power supply worked fine.
The second bit of news I have is that I recently got an email from someone at Silverstone with a hi-res version of the Raven logo! I have been trying to get a hold of this for a while now, first through email then Facebook. Here it is:

This picture is a lot more interesting than the last one. I'm glad to see that those vertical lines do just continue in parallel all around the case. My only fear is that with this new case I may have my work cut out for me positioning my led strips.
Speaking of led strips I wanted to add that I have been looking into creating a GUI to control the RGB leds from my desktop. So far I just have a basic GUI that doesn't even communicate. I have been trying to create it with Java, a language in which I have no experience. Here is what I have right now:
Since I was having trouble creating something from scratch I tried using someones else work. I found this tutorial. However I have not been able to get it working. I think this comment
"Win. The Mac shell script needs a correction, though: for Snow Leopard you need to add the -d32 flag to the .sh script because the serial library is compiled for 32-bit. The script is written with an implicit assumption of a common cathode LED, but that's easy enough to fix."
explains my problem but I am not sure what the commenter means by add the -d32 flag. If anyone can help send me a message.
Good News or Bad News?
So I just went on Silverstone's Raven's Facebook page and saw this:
RV04!
To be reviled at an even June 5th!
So here is my dilemma: I love the RV03 but the RV04 might infact be a much better looking and functioning case than the 03. That said if I want to wait for the case I have to wait until sometime after June 5th just to order it and who know who long that will be. My plan as of now is to wait on buying my case until I have all the other elements I need and then make a desision to either wait for at least June 05 just to see the case or to order the 03 then and there. What do you think?
