The new 62 tonne bell installed in 2000. This and two other 20 tonne bells replaced those destroyed by the soviets in the 1930s. It takes 8 people to move the tongue on this one, 4 on each arc to keep it swinging the right way. This bell is rung about twice a year on special feast days, and when it does ring, the bell itself does not sway, such is the weight. #sergievposad #russianmonastery (at Sergiyev Posad)
