Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Russian Bear
So, It's TMNT's 40th annyversary or something. And to do my personal celebration, I decided to do little personal project and translate this old comic from Russia.
First, a little history. In 90s, Soviet Union seized to exist. Iron curtain fell and much of western content flooded Russian shelves. 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was among it.
Also in 1990s Russian comic companiy "Veles" starts it work. They weren't first to create comics in Russia, but were first to attempt creating it in American style. Were it lack of readership or just hard times in country, but "Veles" seized it's existance in 1998, leaving however a major impression on Russian comic book industry.
Of course, young creators, who just started to dip they toes into mad beast, known as capitalism, had no idea, what is a copyright or a trademark was. All they knew is that kids liked those funny Ninja Turtles you could see on TV. And demand creates supply. Hence this "Comic-coloring book" were created.
Coming from such background, I don't think it is slightly questionable, that artist and writers did quite poor research on TMNT subject and basically decided to wing it. But it doesn't really reflect quality or diminishes interest of such oddity.
Anyway, enough of me blabbing. Here's crazy 90s TMNT comic from Russia.

That was the only time comics from Veles featured Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Wasn't the last time for Russian Bear tho, for he also appeared in "Flying Squirrels and Russian Bear".
Wasn't that last time "Veles" practiced Copyright infrigement either, for they also produced they very own Batman comic.
But all of that is story for another day.
