They say all good things must come to an end. . I don’t know when the end of Avie’s career will come, but I know it’s going to arrive sooner than I wish. . He’s 17 this year. He’s still all try. Full of kindness. His happy, friendly self. But age takes a toll on all of us. At some point the best athletes have to hang it up. . To be sure, he’s earned a retirement where he grows fat and sassy, I’m just not ready for that day...yet. . Honsetly, I don’t think I’ll ever be ready. . I’m beginning to wonder: am I doing all these things for him, (shoeing, vet care, extra supplements) for my own selfish desires, or is he tired and ready to quit running? He owes me nothing. He’s taught me everything. . When is it time to hang up the shoes, and say, “rest easy buddy, you earned it?” . PS. This is the reason I’ve decided to work harder than I think I can. . Well, that and I like wine. 🤣🤣🤣 . But to ride with the best we need to be stronger than we currently are. By we, I mean me. Avie needs no help in the strong department. . I need to be the best me (physically and mentally) for my horses, so I can accomplish my goals. . Speaking of goals, I set one for myself in my Yoga practice yearly. I rarely set one anywhere else, strangely enough but I like to have something to work towards that betters me. . This year my goal is to be able to touch my nose in a forward fold both standing and seated. . What is one thing you want to do to better yourself physically? Do you make goals? . He doesn’t know about winning or losing. . . . He doesn’t care about the clock. . . . What he does care about is pleasing me, and finding peace in our relationship. . . . He cannot disappoint me. When things don’t go as planned, you just smile and make a new plan. And you’re grateful for the learning experience. . If I’m being honest, I’m really struggling right now...And it’s coming through in how I ride my horse. I want to fill my @womensprofessionalrodeoassn permit so bad that I’m not even *riding* my horse! I’m up there, yes, but he’s strong, knows how to run and this weekend I was pretty much just a passenger. I didn’t help him much... And that’s my job — to be his leader. . . So it’s time to slow down, take a breath, remind ourselves that we have the skills and the ability to do what I want, but we need to find “real time”. . . I’m really only competing against who I was yesterday. No one else.
