I'll regularly see the biggest horse enthusiasts casually know close to nothing about horse conformation and it's frightening. I'll see an entire blog dedicated to horses post a horse they say to be so beautiful and majestic but on closer inspection the horses conformation is unbalanced, awkward, or sometimes downright on the verge of unethical. Its insane. Fancy color, patterning, or a long flowy mane isn't shit when a horse is completely unbalanced. No, I'm not just referring to the extremes of halter classes. Some horses just be ugly as shit. They are underperforming and have horrific attitudes but they keep being praised and bred because they have flashy colors. The most beautiful and well performing horses I've ever seen are, for the most part, bays and chestnuts. Not at all am I saying that wonderful performers with good conformation can't also come from and continue to participate in lines with these flashy looks. I'm sure we can all think of a paint we know personally that is just fantastic! Color doesn't magically change attitude, performance, conformation or training, but breeding for it can lead to neglect in those areas. I'm just tired of seeing physically unstable and sometimes soon to be crippled horses being praised online. Especially when there are so many more sustainable and equally as GORGEOUS examples to love on. It's not the horses fault. We shouldn't normalize bad conformational standards--inside or outside of halter classes. It's unfair to the animal.
