finwean family tree part one!!! headcanons for some of the underdeveloped finwean women under the cut <3
Names mean a lot in Asian culture. Chinese culture is no different.
As such, I feel that it is important to get the most important names in âShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsâ right.
Our main guy Shaun.
His name is ćŸć°æ°Ł, romanized as Xu Shang-qi. (Where Xu pronounced a little like âsheâ but less open, and qi is pronounced as chi.)
ćŸ is a word that is used for Shang-qiâs surname. It means âslowly, quietly, calmly, composed, dignifiedâ.
ć° is the middle word in Shaunâs three-character Chinese name. It means âstill, yet; even; fairly, ratherâ. Please donât call him Shang. Shang is not a full name. Call him Shang-qi, or Shang-Chi, if you must. If you can pronounce Dostoevsky or even Benedict Cumberbatch, thereâs no way you can butcher Shang-qi.
æ°Ł is the last word in Shaunâs three-character Chinese name. It has a number of definitions: âgas; smell; air; weather; to make/get angry; to annoy; vital energy; breath; spirit; moral force; tone; atmosphere; manner; type; steam; vapor; spirit; situation; electricityâ.
Those of you who have seen the film can probably combine some of these definitions to form a better picture of who Shang-qi is as a person and who he chooses to become as a result of the circumstances that surrounded him.
Shaunâs dad.
His name is ćŸææŠ, romanized as Xu Wenwu.
ćŸ is his surname. See Shang-qiâs name bio above.
æ is the middle word in Xu Wenwuâs three-character Chinese name. It is defined mostly as âliterature, culture, writingâ. Sometimes even âformal, refined, gentleâ.
æŠ is the last word in Xu Wenwuâs three-character Chinese name. It is defined as âmilitary; martial, warlikeâ. Even âautocratic, powerful, soldier, successor, danceâ.
For those who have watched the film, you can see why this is relevant.
Shaunâs sister.
Her name is ćŸć€é, romanized as Xu Xialing. (Xia can be pronounced âshiaâ, like, yâknow, Shia LeBeouf.)
ćŸ is her surname. Check Wenwuâs and Shaunâs name bios above.
〠is the middle word in Xialingâs three-character Chinese name. It is defined as âsummerâ, and also, âgreat, grand, bigâ. It is an archaic term for China. It is also the name of the Xia Dynasty, circa 2000BC.
é is the last word in Xialingâs three-character Chinese name. It is defined as âquick; alert; efficacious; effective; to come trueâ, sometimes even âdeparted soul, spiritual world/power, spiritualâ. It can also be defined as âagile, clever, intelligentâ.
If youâve seen the film, these are pretty good descriptors for Xialing. Youâll know what I mean.
Shaunâs mother.
Her name was æ éș, romanized as Ying Li. (She was the guardian of Ta Lo.)
(I donât actually know if Ying is her surname, but usually in marriage, the woman âinheritsâ her husbandâs surname, and as such, if her surname is not Ying, she would be known as Xu Ying Li. In which case the definition of Xu as a surname would still apply to her. But letâs just assume that Ying is her surname, the one she inherited at birth, as that is most likely the case, and stick with that.)
æ is the first word in Ying Liâs two-character Chinese name. It is defined as âproject; reflect light; to shine; to show; mirrorâ.
éș is the second word in Ying Liâs two-character Chinese name. It is defined as âbeautiful; magnificent; elegantâ.
If youâve watched the movie, these descriptors are certainly applicable to Ying Li.
Shaunâs maternal aunt.
Her name is æ ć, romanized as Ying Nan. (She is Ying Liâs only surviving younger sister, and assumed Ta Loâs guardianship duties in her siblingâs absence.)
æ is the first word in Ying Liâs two-character Chinese name. See Ying Liâs name bio above.
ć is the second word in Ying Liâs two-character Chinese name. It is defined as âsouth; southern part; southwardâ. Perhaps it could mean that her assumed role was passed south, downward, to her by her older sister Ying Li.
Shaunâs best friend.
Her name is éłçéŻ, romanized as Chen Ruiwen. Her English name is Katy.
éł is the first word in Katyâs three-character Chinese name. It is defined as âto lay out, to exhibit, to display, to narrate, to state, to explain, to tellâ. Which is hilarious, because she kind of takes on a pseudo-narrator role in the movie (âA guy with a freaking machete for an arm just chopped our bus in half!â). The surname Chen is also a very, very common surname.
ç is the second word in Katyâs three-character Chinese name. Itâs original definition is âtoken made of jadeâ, which is really, really interesting since that is the filmâs MacGuffin, the very thing two of which Wenwu was after. It is also defined as âlucky; auspicious; propitiousâ.
éŻ is the last word in Katyâs three-character Chinese name. It is defined as âmulticolored/patterned cloudsâ.

My DnD-Character of two years now: Ruiwen. Watched Honor among Thieves and was basically overjoyed to have him portrayed in it. I mean he's just Xenk with longer hair. So anyway, had to use the opportunity to model him after the promo-shots. Deeply in love with the movie. And my precious idiot paladin.
I like many of their loving fans, am missing my RuiWen. I miss WuDong, I miss them just walking through life together. BaoBao chatting away and Meng Rui just walking after him smiling. It get to me at times emotionally, how gossip can become a way to tear people apart. Shaoye if you can, continue to support our love and Shu Nian protect his heart. Love to you two.
I love I miss your warm hand gently caresses me, and you donât know how much I appreciate every minute weâre together! I just want this moment to last forever.
