Stuck in Your Head - Ruby Lucas
Day 18 of the 25 Days of Winter Fics!
One of your absolute favorite days of the winter season was the day that your local radio station started playing Christmas music. You had always been a sucker for the same songs that they played every year. To you, Christmas wasn’t Christmas without the music.
After leaving your car, you still had the same Kelly Clarkson song stuck in your head. You’re here, where you should be. Snow is falling as the carolers sing. Just wasn’t the same, alone on Christmas day. As you walked into the apartment you shared with your girlfriend, Ruby, you still had the tune in your head. At first, you only hummed along. Now, however, you were singing aloud.
“Presents, what a beautiful sight! Don’t mean a thing if you ain’t holding me tight! You’re all that I need, underneath the-” you belted until you walked in and saw Ruby’s face. “What?”
“Please don’t tell me you like Christmas music,” she said, her last two words said like they were poison.
“Don’t tell me you don’t,” you said, sitting down next to her.
“I absolutely hate it.”
“All Christmas music?” you asked in disbelief.
“I can listen to like one or two songs, but after that, I want to vomit.” You laughed and shook your head.Â
“I’m sure you’re just being dramatic.”
“I’m sure I’m not. Keep your dirty, disgusting Christmas music out of our apartment.”Â
“We’ll see,” you said, standing up. You started walking towards the kitchen, but stopped in your tracks. You walked back towards Ruby and leaned down to kiss her like you always did when you got back from work.
“Thank you,” she said with a sweet smile. You mumbled your agreement and started walking back towards the kitchen again.
The next morning, when you woke up in your bed, Ruby’s warmth was missing. That was odd as you were usually the first one to wake up. However, it wasn’t entirely uncommon. If Ruby had a fitful night’s rest, you would find her early in the morning taking a long shower.Â
Crawling out of bed, you moved towards your bathroom. Sure enough, there was the sound of the shower running as you walked closer. You were going to leave her alone, but as you started walking back towards the bed, you heard another sound. Leaning your ear against the door, you heard the soft mumbling of Ruby singing.Â
You couldn’t make out what song she was singing, but thought that her tune sounded familiar. Softly, you tried to open the door without interrupting her. However, the second you did, Ruby popped her head out of the shower.
“What are you doing?” she asked. You laughed nervously and shrugged.
“Nothing. Just came to say good morning.” She smiled, sticking her head back in the shower.
“Well, good morning to you.”
“I was thinking about going to make some breakfast, do you want some pancakes or something?” you asked.
“Yeah. Pancakes sound good.”
“Okay,” you said, walking slowly towards the door. She didn’t start her singing up again, though, so you closed the door and went to the kitchen. Ruby came out a little bit later, her hair hanging around her shoulders. You kept on mixing the batter, but smiled up at her.Â
“They smell delicious,” she said as you poured the first one onto the pan.
“Thanks. Do you mind grabbing the orange juice?” She nodded, and walked towards the fridge. As she did, she hummed a tune. You listened carefully, thinking that it sounded familiar again. Subconsciously, you picked up the song, too, and started humming along. After flipping the first of two pancakes, you realized what song she was humming.
“I’m gonna hold you close, and make sure that you know, I was lost before you. Christmas was cold and grey, another holiday, alone to celebrate,” you sang aloud. Ruby looked up at you in concern as you laughed. “I knew you liked Christmas music! No one can hate all Christmas music!” you shouted.
“I do not!” she yelled back, pointing at you. You started smiling and she shook her head.
“You do. Don’t worry, babe, I won’t rub it in. As long-”
“As long as what?” she asked, jutting out her hip.
“As long as you sing along with me,” you said, smiling. She opened her mouth to say something, but you turned around and ignore her. You walked towards the cd player sitting on top of your counter, and started playing the exact song that Ruby had stuck in her head. “Ready?” you asked.
“No.”
“Too bad,” you said, hitting play. Suddenly, a soft twinkling sound started from the cd player, before the song started playing. She stared dead panned at you as you started singing loudly. “You’re here, where you should be! Snow is falling as the carolers sing! Just wasn’t the same- Come on Ruby!”
“I don’t even know this song!”
“Liar!” you said, dancing towards her. You took her hands in yours and started swaying. Ruby giggled as she reluctantly started dancing with you, too.
“And then, one day, everything changed! You’re all I need! UNDERNEATH THE TREE!” you both sang loudly. You laughed and Ruby pulled you closer you so you were now wrapped in each other’s arms as you danced. You looked up and kissed her softly. She put her hands in your hair, pulling you in for a deeper kiss. You gripped her waist as she pushed you back up against the counter.
“I knew you like Christmas music,” you said, pulling away for a moment.Â
“And I knew you’d burn those pancakes,” she said, leaning back in to kiss you. You started to smell the burning pancakes, but didn’t care as the next song on the cd started to play and Ruby continued to kiss you harder.
