"Oh, my God..." You groaned, laying down in a booth of Granny's Diner. "Kill me now and put me out of my sugar-fueled misery." Ruby laid on the opposite side of you, peering at you under the table and looking a bit green.
"I didn't know I had a limit on how much I could eat until now." Ruby whined, holding her stomach with a pained expression on her face. "I love Halloween, I really do. But this, this was too much."
"I told you two to slow down or else you’d get a tummy ache, but no one wants to listen to Granny." Granny lectured as she closed up the Diner, but you two didn't even have the strength to fight back. "I have something for stomach aches I can give you, hold tight." She wandered away from sight and you, learning nothing, grabbed another piece of candy.
"No way. I'd puke if I had another piece." Ruby protested as you ripped another wrapper open.
"It's only Halloween once a year." You popped the piece of chocolate in your mouth, consequences be damned.

The fall is a season when staying indoors with a warm beverage and a book seems much more enjoyable than during any other time of year. There are just days when going out into the rainy, windy weather, with temperatures much lower than a month or two back, doesn't feel like the best option.
Today's a day where you don't have much choice. Even though you'd love to curl up on your sofa and take your time, your duties await. To make this perspective a little more enjoyable, you stop by Granny's Diner to grab a coffee.
Ruby greets you with a smile as you seat by the counter and sigh.
'Hi, gorgeous,' she says. 'What can I do for you?'
Feeling that you're starting to blush, you say:
'Hey, Ruby. If you had any coffee to spare, that would be a life saver.'
'Give me one minute, I might have something that will help you.'
You can't see what exactly is that she's preparing since she turned around to make you a coffee and now her back's facing you, but it soon starts to smell delicious.
After a short wait Ruby turns back around and places a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll on a plate in front of you.
'I only asked for a coffee,' you remark, grabbing the cup.
'I know, but the rolls are fresh from the oven. You should try it.'
You take a first sip of the coffee. Aside from the energy boost you can sense slowly creeping in, you can taste caramel and pumpkin spice in the coffee, which makes it even better. Now less hesitant, you also take a bite of the still warm cinnamon roll.
'It's delicious, Ruby!' you say with your mouth still full.
'I'm glad you like it,' she responds with a chuckle.
You slowly go through your coffee and roll, chatting with Ruby, using the occassion that Diner isn't too busy yet.
Once you finish, you reach to your bag for your wallet. When Ruby realises that, she starts to shush you.
'There's no need, Y/N. It's on the house.'
'But, Ruby...'
'No, honestly. It's a special Halloween offer.'
You quickly glance at your phone and realise it indeed is Halloween. The way Ruby winks at you as you leave makes you think it wasn't entirely true, but you couldn't really deny her argument. Besides, getting free treats as a kind act from a friendly person definitely warms up your day.
Request: Wattpad- Can you do a ruby x reader where your helping her clean up the diner
Word Count: 421
Author: Charlotte
“Why am I the one that has to tidy up?” Ruby sighed grabbing a bin liner to tidy up all the disposable cups and plates that needed to be rid of before the breakfast run in the morning.
There had been a party at Granny’s diner that spanned into the early hours of the morning. Once everyone had left Granny had told Ruby it was down to her to tidy everything up so that Granny could serve breakfast in a few hours as they did every morning.
“So that you don’t have to do the breakfast run,” you offered, grabbing a cloth to help clean down the surfaces.
“Thank you for staying to help out,” she smiled. “You really didn’t have to.”
You shrugged your shoulders. “It wasn’t far to just leave you to do it all. It is a tip in here.”
The two of you did your best to tidy up the aftermath of the party. It was for someone’s birthday in Storybrook, but it looked as though a riot had commenced rather than a simple birthday party. Food was everywhere, and although there were a couple of bins for people’s rubbish, no one seemed to have used them at all.
“You know I am always up for a party,” Ruby sighed. “But the clean up is never quite as fun.”
“Collecting used paper plates, isn’t exactly what anyone would call a pastime or something of interest,” you stated. “Nor is scrubbing cake icing out of the diner chairs. Honestly how did icing get so deep into these seats?”
She let out a laugh. “Heaven’s knows. I have spent twenty minutes trying to scrub this seat clean, but I think this pink stain is now a permanent addition.”
You both circled around the diner collecting trash and cleaning anything else up, disinfecting any surfaces that were an issue due to food waste.
“I swear there wasn’t even this many items at the party, how do we have three rubbish bags filled with crap?” You frowned, tying up another bag of rubbish, ready to take them out to the bins.
“I don’t know. It honestly feels like no one even ate anything, and just seemed to drop it on the floor or smear it into the seats,” she responded.
It took you several hours to finish tidy up, the sun beginning to rise before the building was ready to be used as a diner again. The two of you slumped onto the floor, finally ready to have a moments rest.
Requested by anon: I’m challenging you to write a one-shot that’s a modern version of the 1985 movie The Breakfast Club with Once Upon A Time characters as normal teens in high school who aren’t fairytale characters. Belle is a nerd. Emma is the captain of the girls’ basketball team. Ariel is the basket case. Aurora is a prep. Ruby is a troublemaking punk. They spend a Saturday in detention and learn they have more in common than they thought. Purely platonic, no romance, no basket case getting a makeover.
Words: 1494
Detention was something that most of the students at school has gone through at least once. However, there were some students who found themselves in detention more often than others. It was on this particular Saturday that a particular group of students found themselves heading towards a dreary classroom reserved for students who had caused trouble during the week.
Belle couldn't believe that she had to spend her Saturday in detention of all places. She was a good student! Who had the vocabulary of someone who was in college! She knew that she was only here because she talked back to a teacher who gave her a lower grade than she deserved. It was just ridiculous that she had to be punished for dishing out the truth. If anything, it was that teacher who should be sitting here.
Emma fiddled with the edge of her varsity jacket. She didn't even want to be here at school, mainly because no one here was cool enough for her. Being the star basketball player should have afforded her certain benefits, including being exempt from any detention. Ever. But apparently, that's not the case, as she found herself being driven against her will to Saturday detention for skipping class. Her teammates had convinced her that they could skip class to hang out by the local river, and they had a swell time just throwing random things into the river. Emma didn't understand why her parents decided to be such hardasses about skipping class. Her other teammates skated past the situation with a slap on the wrist at most. Her parents were so annoying.
Ariel hated school. Everyone was so fake with each other that they didn't know where the act ended and where their real personalities began. Ariel never talked much, but that was more out of choice than necessity. What other people her age found interesting was exceptionally boring to her. It wasn't like Ariel couldn't see how the other kids looked at her. People thought she was a freak and a little weird at best. She was just too mature to engage with that type of behavior and shrugged it off for the most part.
Aurora couldn't believe that she was stuck with this bunch of losers. Being a cheerleader, she was used to being the top girl in any situation, but apparently, none of these girls would pay her any mind. It was frustrating, to say the least. The only person that she felt a bit of a connection to was Emma, but that was only because she knew what being in sports was like. But aside from that, Aurora couldn't be bothered with these losers. She refocused on applying her lipstick while ignoring everyone else in the room.
Ruby refused to sit in any chair designated for her. With her bright red lipstick and a matching fiery attitude, Ruby refused to take any type of authority seriously. She couldn't wait to leave high school. It wasn't like she had anything in common with these rich, self-absorbed assholes anyway. Impressing people has always been a waste of time, and she was definitely not going to start now that graduation was so near.
---------
After the asshole of a teacher Mr. Vargas left the room, each of the girls looked at the board in absolute boredom. None of them wanted to start the essay about how they ended up here in Saturday detention, and they were not about to actually start talking to one another. The fact that they were so different made the idea seem absolutely ridiculous.
Being the perpetually bored rebel that she was, Ruby started throwing little bits of paper at pretty much everyone at the room. It wasn't until she threw a wad at Aurora that she finally managed to get a response.
"Hey, loser! Can you watch where you throw those things? I'm actually trying to look good here."
"No amount of makeup can hide that ugly personality Aurora." Ruby's sneer was evident to anyone who bothered to turn around and look.
"At least I have friends who want to talk to me, unlike some people who are stuck here every weekend."
"Oh, you think that hurts my feelings? You're the one with all of those fake Barbie friends. Are you sure you guys can tell each other apart?"
"Guys, guys stop! Can you both stop arguing?" Emma looked like she under torture for just sitting there.
"Nice to see the local jock is intelligent enough to piece together a sentence."
"Shut up Aurora!" This time, both Ruby and Emma seemed to have something to say to the local queen bee.
This argument was followed by about an hour and a half of silence. It only seemed like Belle had started writing the essay, as everyone else was just lounging around staring off into space.
After another fifteen minutes of dead silence, Ruby finally managed to say, "What are you all doing here anyway? Aren't you all supposed to be the prodigal rich kids who never get into any sort of trouble?"
"I'm here because I talked back to a teacher for a grade that I received." Belle couldn't look at anyone in the eye as she spoke.
"Quiet Belle? Talking back to a teacher?" Ruby looked shocked.
"And why are you here? I wouldn't be surprised if you were here every single week."
"Well, according to the teachers and administration of this cesspool they call a school, I am a consistent troublemaker who has no regard for rules. Which would explain why I'm here more often than any other party you all might be invited to."
"That makes sense," Aurora scoffed. Seeing that all eyes have turned to her, she rolled her eyes and spoke. "Well, I guess it's my turn. I'm here because apparently, I bullied some girl in class, and my parents couldn't get me out of here. I don't even know what exactly I did wrong, all I know is that I'm stuck here with you guys here today."
Emma simply raised her eyebrows as everyone turned to look at her. "What, you guys want me to just spill my guts out to everyone?" Seeing people nod in her direction, Emma just gave out a long sigh. "Well, I'm here because I skipped out on class with some of my friends. The reason why none of them are here is that my parents thought it would be nice for me to 'face the consequences for my actions', whatever the hell that means. I don't know what the hell I'm doing here because I don't think I deserve it."
"Deserve what?" Everyone turned around to just stare. It was so rare to hear Ariel talk that it was a shock to actually hear her voice. "What? All of you assume that you are somehow immune to the consequences of your actions, and then there are other people who actually have to live their lives on their own."
"And why are you here, Ariel?"
"I'm here because I honestly have nowhere better to be. I don't have the best home life, so being here at school is safer than being at home."
There was a period of silence as everyone considered what to say. All of them had given Ariel a dirty look in the past, but they never bothered to consider why she was that way. Now that they knew, they all felt bad for their actions.
"I'm sorry about that Ariel." Aurora seemed to actually mean that this time.
"I don't have the best home life either." Ruby took out another lollipop. "At least now I know I'm not alone in that regard."
"My mom has a lot of expectations from me," Emma stared at the paper. "She wants me to be more like her, but I'm not my mom. It sucks trying to impress her when all she wants is for me to be a fake version of myself."
"We all have shitty parents, alright." Aurora sat on her desk and sighed. "No one really likes their parents. Except maybe for little Belle here."
"I never said I liked being with my parents."
"Is that why your head is constantly buried inside a pile of books?"
Belle silently nodded as the rest of the group lapsed into a comfortable silence. After a minute, Aurora awkwardly cleared her throat as she looked around at the other students.
"It seems like we have more in common than we thought."
"I guess so." Ariel still looked doubtful as to whether or not she wanted to know these people.
"Does anyone want to take shots at the trash can with paper balls?" Emma looked excited to make these new people her friends.
"Only a basketball jock would think of something like that as fun. But I'm down if everyone else is." Aurora plopped down next to Emma as everyone else gathered around. Saturday detention didn't seem too bad after all.

Song: A Winter’s Ball
“Ugh, did we fake an illness last time, too?” you asked as you stood on the top of the stairs, overlooking the ball. It was a beautiful winter evening to celebrate the marriage of Prince Charming and Snow White. A beautiful evening that would have been better spent with your girlfriend.
“Yes, you did,” Ruby said, ascending the stairs in a dress that matched her name. You moved behind her in your blue dress, keeping a big enough distance.
“You’re not going to leave me here, are you?” you asked. Ruby winked back at you and you laughed. Unfortunately, your father caught that exchange and gave you a disapproving look. He had never really gotten over your relationship with Ruby, and was always encouraging, or in this case, forcing, you to go to balls, in the hopes you would meet a wealthy, high class man.
You frowned back at your father, but walked onto the marble dance floor nonetheless. Ruby was across the room, hugging Snow and Charming in a warm embrace. You were watching her happily, that you didn’t notice a shadow come up behind you, until he tapped your shoulder.
“Hello, my lady,” the blonde man said. You gave him your hand, which he kissed as you curtsied.
“Prince Kain,” you said, recognizing the man who had come to every ball, party, and funeral your father had ever thrown.
“How are you, Y/N?” he asked with a kind smile. You knew that he knew you were with Ruby, but your father must have sent him over. Kain was such a kind, peaceful soul, that he probably would marry you if your father asked, knowing that you loved another.
“Fine, thank you. How are you?” He smiled and you saw him glance around the room.
“If my father sent you over, you can ask me to dance now. Don’t waste your charm on me.” He beamed at you and sighed.
“Thank you, my lady.” You laced your arm in his as he led you out onto the dance floor. Kain was a very good dnacer, and spun you around with ease. If your father had arranged it earlier, you probably could have loved Kain. But of course, now knowing Ruby, there was nothing you could do to stop your love for her.
Kain was polite, but glad when your dance was over. When it was appropriate, he rushed over to a pretty girl with dark hair across the room.
“How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore, go on and grow into more of a phenomenon? Watch this obnoxious, arrogant, loud mouth bother be seated at the right hand of your father.” Ruby was behind you silently. She was always good at sneaking up on you. You looked over at your father as Ruby moved closer to you, touching your waist conspicuously. He was talking to a red headed duke, most likely, due to his attire. The man looked up at you suddenly with a creepy smile.
“Who is that?” you asked.
“Duke Charlie, a cousin of Charming’s.”
“Well off?” you asked, moving to stand next to your girlfriend.
“Most definitely.”
“Hmm, just my father’s type.” Ruby sighed and you frowned at her. You wanted to kiss her, but knew you shouldn’t with your father watching.
“Oh no, he’s getting up,” Ruby said. In truth, he was. He was stalking his way over to you two.
“Do you want to dance?” you asked her quickly.
“What? Right here? Right now?” she asked in confusion.
“Yes.” You laced your hand in hers and brought her out to the dance floor. Ruby put her hand on your waist, and you put yours on her shoulder. The song started playing and you moved softly across the floor with your girlfriend, for the first time in public.
“Your father looks angry.”
“That’s okay. This happy day is not for him.” She smiled again and you couldn’t resist the urge to kiss her. The music seemed to slow as your lips touched. You were aware of the disapproving look your father was giving you, but you didn’t care.
“He looks a lot angrier,” she said when you broke apart.
“Good. Then he has more work to do.”
“The duke doesn’t look too happy either.”
“Even better. You know there is something you have that the duke never will, no matter how rich and well off he is.”
“What’s that?” Ruby asked with a giggle.
“You’re reliable with the ladies.” She laughed and this time she kissed you and it was just as enchanting as the last. When the song finished, you knew that you had to leave the dance floor. Ruby walked with you towards Snow. She was grinning just as big as Ruby could.
“Hi,” she said, giving you a friendly hug. She looked over at Ruby and they both smiled. “That was awesome.”
“Thank you,” Ruby said.
“I don’t think he thought so,” Snow said. You turned around and saw your father standing behind you both. You sighed and walked towards him, needing no courage after what just happened.
“Y/N-”
“Before you say anything, I don’t regret what I did. I’m tired of you ignoring-” He put up a hand to stop you.
“Don’t be sorry. I am sorry. I shouldn’t have kept setting you up. I’m sorry,” he said again. You nodded, speechless.
“Thank you.” He nodded and hugged you. It felt like the eyes of the entire ball were on you, but looking over your father’s shoulder, you knew that wasn’t true. You were blending into the crowd, and that was fine with you. The only eyes you needed to be seen by was Ruby. Looking back at her, you found that. She smiled at you and the two of you embraced.
“I love you,” you said.
“I love you, too,” she said, through a happy laugh that was beginning to turn into a tear. Acceptance was a wonderful thing.
