A full year has gone by
A full year has gone by since we left San Francisco on this grand journey. In six weeks, we will return to where we started thus completing a full trip around the planet. But we will not stay. Though we had planned to travel for a year, we have so much left to do and see that we decided to extend our trip for another six months. Or more. We shall see.
We have not yet tired of traveling. We haven’t yet run out of money. We have run out of space in our passports. We continue to teach Emil and he continues to expand his horizons. We have crossed the equator five times. We have only misplaced our passports once. We were miraculously able to retrieve a driver’s license lost on a ferry trip to Finland and returned to us five months later in Vietnam. We have lost more than a few pieces of Lego. We have made several friends. We have driven more right hand-drive cars than left hand. We have not lost our patience or our corkscrew.
In a week, we leave New Zealand with freshly-renewed passports to fly to the islands of the South Pacific. Then, after a further few weeks spent in Australia, we journey to North America to travel from the West coast to the East and then onwards to Iceland. France, Denmark, and Norway follow, with other destinations we have yet to determine. Where we end up at the end is anyone’s guess.
Just one stunning day's riding makes up for all the shity riding days. Somedays there's the places that just blows your mind completely. Mindbendingly beautiful. Dinner in Sydney
On Thursday, we woke up early in New Caledonia in order to get on a flight to a city we’ve never been to in a country we’ve never visited to host a dinner party in an apartment we’ve never seen. It was an odd set of circumstances but the best opportunity to meet with two other families like us, traveling around the world over the course of a couple of years.
Emil was by far the most excited for this event. He rarely has friends for more than a few days and time to play with two friends about his age - Lydia and Aksel - meant Disneyland-level excited. Luckily, the parents of these kids are terrific and when we’ve met in the past, we never have enough time to compare stories, struggles, observations, and advice. Five hours of wine and dinner and dessert and “movie-fort” was time most eagerly enjoyed.
Most of all, we couldn’t get over the coincidences of not only having met on the road, but having been able to arrange to meet again. We met Lydia, Anne, and Damon on a playground in Tbilisi; we met Aksel, April, and Jason on the ferry between the north and south islands of New Zealand. These friends are all the more precious for their rarity on the road and for all we have in common.
When they left to take their flight the next day to Vladivostok for a Trans-Siberian train trip, we waved goodbye to Aksel saying, “Bye! See you in France in May!” When we part with Lydia’s family, it will be to meet up again on the road somewhere in Europe after they explore South East Asia. Cant wait to see everyone again!
