The Paradox of Choice - I think this is what got me yesterday. Great watch.
forever thankful that I teach in a context where I'm able to do most of the positive things he's talking about while avoiding most of the negative ones

Is making a career out of a hobby really the best idea?
I was in psychology class today, and we were on the subject of learning and what motivates people to so certain things. We talked about internal and external motivators, and the one message that really stuck out was that if you start with something that is internally motivated, such as playing an instrument or making art, if you begin to get paid for it, you will lose the internal motivation, and you will only have external motivation. We were shown this segment of this video for additional description.
What does that mean? Well, if you stop getting paid or rewarded to do that specific thing, then you'll no longer have any motivation to do it, external or internal. If people loved to cook, and they became a chef, they would begin to not love cooking as much. The same applies to all behaviors.
So, what this means, is that if you have something that you truly, truly love, then be very careful before you decide to make it a profession, or you may lose all of your motivation to do it.
As for the whole video, I'd recommend watching the whole thing, it's very interesting on motivation as a whole subject, and is very insightful.
