In the weeks before the parting, we talk about clothes. After months of cohabited closet, there are deals to be brokered. I say I'll trade you the green oversized shirt I bought in Echo Park for your 'Hail Mary Jane' tee. You offer me your purple striped socks for mine that read 'BEER'. We both think we could negotiate something with your blue sweater, but your mother would kill you if you gave it away. And as with every other way we find to stall the time, this, too, is a distraction. A sidestep. I'd give my beanie for your baseball cap, give up all the other beds I bounce between for a steady spot in yours.
