(Okay for those of you who don’t know, Royal Gardner is the man that Anne dates for a while and then dumps him when she realizes she loves Gilbert).

Let the Cole x Roy (Royole?) headcanons commence! 

They meet once before Anne even introduces them. Cole goes on a trip with Aunt Jo to Kingsport and spends some time in the pretty parks while Jo goes and conducts some business. Roy walks by, compliments the drawing Cole is sketching, and continues on his path. Cole is immediately like *heart eyes* because Roy is every man’s byronic dream. 

When they meet again, they don’t recognize each other. But Cole is just as enamored just as quickly. And it’s different than the way Anne likes Roy. 

Cole hesitates to tell Anne to think twice about her relationship with Roy. He wants to say “All you do is talk about how much you miss Gilbert, and you barely want to see Roy anymore” but because he has a crush on Roy, he feels it wouldn’t be right. So as the whole thing unfolds, he puts Anne first and silently bites back his feelings. 

Cole and Roy are good friends after Anne introduces them, though. The defense mechanisms that Roy puts up - all his superficial, high falutin talk, and his tendency to think he’s better than people - Cole calls him out on. 

“You’re kind and compassionate, Roy. You don’t have to lose that to be respected.” “You don’t understand.” “I respect you just the way you are, Gardner.” Of course, he means something else. 

Cole also really humbles Roy. Roy has never talked to someone who worked hard, was rejected by society, and lived in poverty (other than Anne, who likely doesn’t talk to him about it). Throughout their friendship, Cole opens up about his experience, and Roy develops a real compassion for people in Cole’s situation. 

When Cole comes out to Roy, Roy kisses him and Cole was like, “Fuck you!! That was really awful of you.” And Roy was hurt and confused about the way he felt, so they acted like it never happened. 

Gilbert figures out what’s going on with Cole and he’s like, “As someone who’s living it too, what can I do to help? Do you need a friend?” 

When Anne finally does break things off with Roy, Cole nearly cries in relief and it all finally clicks for you. “You’re in love with Roy, aren’t you?” And she cries because she didn’t realize she’d been hurting him all along. Cole doesn’t blame her, though. He says he’s just glad she doesn’t despise him for pining after her man. 

When Roy says that Anne ruined his life and that she’s an awful person, Cole was like “Look pal, don’t you fucking talk to my best friend like that. I don’t care what weird stuff you and I have been through, but you don’t get to say stuff like that to her just because you’re hurt.” 

Several months later, after a few courteous letters have been exchanged, Roy shows up at Aunt Jo’s house and asks to see Cole. When Cole comes to the door, Roy says something to the extent of, “I’m falling in love with you and if you tell me to stop, I’ll stop right here, right now. But if you feel the same way then I’m ready to stop pretending and living a facade.”
