The Battle of Waterloo
The Battle of Waterloo, took place in Belgium on June 18 1815, marking the final defeat of the French military leader and emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 - 1821). An invasion of Russia in 1812 led to his exile and abdication in 1814, but later returned to France in 1815 and resumed power. On June 18th, Napoleon marched his army of 72,000 troops against the 68,000 - man British army which had taken up position in the south of Brussels near the village of Waterloo. The Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley (1769 - 1852), led the British army which consisted of Belgian, Dutch and German troops. The battlefield was waterlogged from the previous nights rain storm, so waited until midday to command the attack but due to fatigue and poor health, Napoleon made tactical errors and acted indecisively. Due to this, Napoleon was defeated and Wellington went on to serve as the British PM.
