The hostess had been just outside the entrance to Club Shine, the neon lights offering enough illumination for her to check the bruises left around her neck using a compact mirror. Even if the color was now an angry red (doomed to shift into an upset purple later), it would be difficult to come up with a story to explain these marks to Melissa’s manager - at best, he would want the girl to go back home (and she really needed the money); at worst, she was looking at long hours at the station, giving a statement that would get nowhere.
A deep voice startled Melissa then - and she turned around, shutting the compact mirror by reflex and clearly still a little bit shaken with the incident that had resulted in the obvious signs of altercation on the woman’s skin. But upon seeing Kiryu, she relaxed - a sigh of relief left the girl’s lips and a small smile followed, a nice bow added at the ending in a show of manners before a customer.
“Kiryu-san, good evening,” the brunette said smoothly, straightening her spine up and using the free hand to iron out any wrinkles from the yellow dress she was using. Kiryu was no stranger - he was a regular of Rina’s, one of Club Shine’s most popular hostesses, but Melissa had sat with the tall, strong man on a few occasions before when Rina was busy or on a day off. The foreign hostess did not know much about Kiryu - but what she did know made him an interesting figure in her book.
There were rumors floating around about him being former yakuza - that in itself was a mystery for Melissa. She could swear those who joined were in for life, but of course the girl wouldn’t go around asking about people’s personal lives like that when she only had a couple of hours with him every now and then. Besides, that wasn’t what made her curious about him - Kiryu was no ordinary-looking guy, had a nice voice and was incredibly charming when visiting... Whatever the hell did he need a cabaret club for?
“A gaijin businessman,” Melissa replied at long last, addressing his real question with a soft grimace; the woman felt (and looked) embarrassed, lamenting she had fallen for such a classical trap, “I had a date before work, you know how these go. This client... Didn’t. He was under the impression that paying for my meals earned him additional privileges and... Well, maybe he confused me with a prostitute. Guys from abroad sometimes can’t really get the purpose of a place like Shine,” the hostess shrugged, aware that she had volunteered way too much intel, the type that not even her manager was aware of.
And that notion brought the girl back to reality, offering a stereotypical hostess smile to him and clasping her hands together at the front of her body. “But I’m okay, Kiryu-san! When things got out of hand, this really strangely dressed guy in a snakeskin jacket stepped in and... Well, I guess I won’t be seeing that client again. I just need to hide these bruises until they go away - a high collared dress will do fine.”
The girl approached Kiryu, taking his closest arm with a gentle grip and offering him her best smile - despite the scary incident with another man earlier on, Melissa clearly did not share the same fears with Kiryu Kazuma. “I appreciate your concern, Kiryu-san, but don’t let me spoil your night. You’re here for Rina-chan, aren’t you? She’s working tonight, let me take you to her as a thanks. Just... Please keep this to yourself, ne? No need to worry anyone else.”
