Quali strumenti possiamo lasciare ai nostri figli per interpretare il mondo in perenne mutamento in cui viviamo? Come possiamo far fronte alla valanga quotidiana di notizie deprimenti che ci arriva dai media, dai social e dalla politica? Perché prestiamo più attenzione alle notizie negative, quelle che ci danno l’impressione che tutto stia lentamente, ma inesorabilmente, andando a rotoli? Di quali irragionevoli pregiudizi è vittima il nostro pensiero? Attraverso un attento studio dei dati, Hans Rosling, il "maestro Jedi dei dati", dimostra che le cose non stanno andando così male e che, anzi, siamo di fronte a un radicale miglioramento. Per capirlo dobbiamo però imparare a guardare ai fatti con curiosità, a metterli in prospettiva e a saperci stupire: basta pensare alla vita dei nostri nonni per accorgerci degli enormi passi avanti che stiamo facendo, in ogni campo. Per esempio, non ha più senso parlare di "mondo occidentale" e "mondo in via di sviluppo", aumentando il baratro tra noi e il resto del pianeta, quando ormai quasi tutti i Paesi stanno raggiungendo lo stesso livello in termini di istruzione, di opportunità e di crescita. Abbiamo tutti la possibilità di usare la forza dei fatti a nostro vantaggio, per capire e non lasciarci accecare dalla rabbia, dall’ignoranza, dalle semplificazioni. To tie in with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals summit later this week, the OU teamed up with production company Wingspan Productions and data raconteur Professor Hans Rosling to produce a second “Don’t Panic” lecture performance that airs on BBC2 at 8pm tonight: Don’t Panic – How to End Poverty in 15 Years.
