James Rosenquist was born on this day in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in 1933. Rosenquist called this work, titled “Zone,” his first fully Pop Art painting, which he created not long after he quit his job as a billboard artist. Here a woman’s face is juxtaposed with a dewy tomato, resulting in a fragmented composition that slices into two distinct but interlocking zones.
