"I'll just say this. After I was gone, she hurt my son in ways that can never be fully undone. My sister was my best friend, until she wasn't any longer. But Tristan... Tristan is always my son. Dead or not, like the Garden, I'm his mother from cradle to coffin. Better than the Garden... Death doesn't end that. I suppose she's just lucky it took them so long."

Ronnie smiles. "Well, there's less of that now. But it used to be... God, anything that let me turn my brain off. Sitcoms, as long as they didn't have the 'unhappy wife, shitty husband' stereotype, I am not ashamed to admit I read a lot of romance novels and Stephen King. I hated Love, Actually but loved Shakespeare in Love. Used to watch Disney movies with Tris, of course we had to watch his favorites over and over again. I got used to some of them. Oh, God, we watched so much Dinosaur Train..."

"Oh, probably by offering to get takeout for dinner." She laughs. "Or a hug. I'm a pretty simple person."
What’s the easiest way to flirt with you?
"I always hated how people flirt in high school." Ronnie goes a little starry-eyed. "You know what Paul did? He didn't flirt. He just walked up to me one day and said, I want to have pizza with you and go to the dance. Just like that. No dancing around, no games. So of course I said yes to both. And then I found out that he's really funny when he isn't at school, you know, just overrun by everyone else being loud all the time. Paul was so easy to fall in love with. And he was so honest about loving back."

I think I have but I can’t remember what I said or find the ask, so let’s assume this is the first time, haha

Ronnie would love Laken. If Ronnie were still alive somehow to meet them, they would end up texting each other entirely independently of Chris, having long conversations. Ronnie would think her son hit the jackpot on partner choice.
Ronnie would love their confidence and chill nature but willingness to go to bat for the ones they love each and every time without fail. It would feel, to Ronnie, like Chris found someone who will encourage his strengths and not his weaknesses.
Although, to be honest, she always kind of figured he’d probably fall in love with Aki eventually - childhood best friends to friendly rivals to lovers, right? - so this would be a bit of a surprise for her.
Eventually, Laken will go to the graves with Chris, and get to ‘meet’ them. Laken takes the concept of the guardianship of the dead pretty seriously, so it wouldn’t exactly be a light meeting, and they wouldn’t joke about it. They would have a very serious conversation with the gravestone, and express how important it is for them to be here, doing this.
Chris will leave that visit feeling a sense that his mother and father heard them.
