The the one’s who say “I don’t know how” and the ones who say “I can learn”. People put limits on themselves and then blame the universe for not offering them more. The learning process is long and hard and so many quite because they can’t ‘get it right away’. No coddling here; stop being so weak to yourself! Hard is uncomfortable and stressful and anxiety-ridden and kicks your morale in the butt and makes you feel less than...but if hard is all it takes to sit you down, then you didn’t want to do it anyway. Ronin Scouts from “Across the Multiverse”. When we were putting this set together I was dancing in Boysenberry at Knott’s and teaching with Active Learning. Boysenberry was 30+ days of pure cardio every day, Active Learning was 4 hours 5 days a week of K-5th graders requiring so much stimulation to dance, and at Corps we were building crazy endurance and acro strength. I was really proud of all the things I was discovering I could do on the cage when we put this piece together. I tried things I honestly didn’t think I’d have the courage to try, and I really think I was a good peak of strength during this time. Performing this rendition of Ronin Scouts for our “Across the Multiverse” show was a great mental state to be in. Every time we reentered the stage, we did so as a different character, so going on as the warrior that is Sailor Jupiter was familiar to me, but personifying her as a wandering Samurai made it more intense. When I reentered the stage for this piece, it was with the implication of a battle to be won. The intent behind this number was organically built amongst the Scouts, trying to mix athleticism with elegance in a new way to show that the planetary guardians are formidable in their own right. Starting the piece on the cage was powerful, and melding with my fellow Scouts was seamless.
