Waking up in a stream of warm sunlight was about as blissful as it could get for someone who was, let’s face it, predominantly feline in nature. As consciousness struck him and Magnus noticed the warmth on his skin and the orange glow coming from the light on the other side of his eyelids, he stretched and smiled. There had been something. Some... dream. Something that he could almost remember, almost touch and live. If only he could go back for a little while. 

“My lord,” a voice came from Magnus’s left, blocking out part of the sunlight. 

Instantly, Magnus scowled. Lord didn’t sound right. Though... perhaps that hadn’t been the first time he’d ever been called that. Now he couldn’t remember. 

Why would I have ever been called anything else?

Magnus ran a hand over his forehead before finally sitting up amongst the tangle of white sheets to face the open space where, rationally, a wall to his room might have been. He was frowning, trying to understand who this man was and what in the hell he wanted.

“My lord, Magnus.”

“Yes, what is it?”

“Forgive me for disrupting your sleep, but he’s here.”

Magnus blinked. Then blinked again. He wasn’t going to ask who had arrived. 

“Your... your slave, my lord? The one you... hand selected.”

Magnus had no memory of choosing a slave. Or perhaps he had a vague one. Either way, he nodded, slid from his bed and wasn’t really all that surprised to find himself naked. Before he could search for something to wear, two servants were attending him. He looked down and frowned. Shouldn’t there be more color? Magnus shrugged and followed the intruder.

In the courtyard, a tall, handsome, dark-haired young man stood. Golden brackets around his neck and wrists. Magnus stepped closer and was stunned at how incredibly familiar he felt. Which is probably why I selected him in the first place. He reached up and touched the black mark that ran beautifully along the stalk of the slave’s neck. “Remove this restraint.”

“My lord?”
