18. things you said through your teeth
"Why did you do that?" Widowmaker says, cold as ice.
"Do what?" Sombra says, as she always does, starting her little game of questions and questions-as-answers. Widowmaker won't play, not this time.
"Kill Maximilien before we could rescue him."
"I was here the whole time, amiga, I didn't kill him." A shot ring right next to her ear, and she shuts up.
"Gunspray patterns. Your gun. Dumping him. Your plan," Widowmaker lowers the smoking barrel, her heart already beating slightly faster. She walks slowly towards Sombra, gun up against the shorter woman's chest.
She could teleport away, but she didn't. She probably wants to know what Widowmaker, the loyal, heartless assassin will do.
Her back hits the brick wall and Widowmaker stops, eyes scanning the suddenly serious face before her. Someone she thought liked her, for whatever reason, turning against their organization. Sombra was a wild card, but she hadn't crossed this line before, and Widowmaker had a duty.
"Amélie--"
"I am not Amélie," She says, pressing the gun painfully into Sombra, who lifts her hands up in submission. Whoever Amélie was, she didn't exist anymore. Sombra should know that.
"You're not," she clarifies, her voice edged with something Widowmaker couldn't feel. "Amélie knew Maximilien. He convinced her to join them and let Moira experiment on her. Maximilien was a part of everything that created you."
"Then we should thank him," she says, voice dry as she lets up on the rifle slightly.
"I'm not finished. He had a new plan to change you even further. Another memory wipe, more genetic re-engineering. Extra eyes, if Moira wanted." Sombra scowls as she speaks, already summoning documents mid-air to shove at Widowmaker's face.
She doesn't step away, despite the information right in front of her. So what if he wanted to erase her? She already was nothing, a machine with one purpose: to kill. The new her would just be another machine.
"That's no excuse to kill a Talon leader." She says. "What is the real reason."
Sombra doesn't answer fast enough. Something hot flashes through Widowmaker - she dares to think she's above us all? She drops the gun to her side, hand snapping forward around Sombra's neck.
"Give me a reason to not kill you. I am under orders to kill those who betray Talon on site, and you are no exception."
She can hear the dropship incoming. Curiousity burns in the back of her mind.
"Or you can tell me why you killed him."
Sombra's hands wrap around her arm, burning hot even through the sleeves. "I...I just can't."
Widow lifts her against the wall - a rare display of strength. "Why?" She asks again, searching in those unnatural purple eyes for something.
Sombra chokes for a second, jaw working. There's tears in the corners of her eyes. Widow counts the seconds, adjusts so she's no longer choking the girl, and waits as the dropship wings grow louder.
A tear dribbles down Sombra's face. "I don't want them to change you."
Widowmaker drops her. She steps away, slings her gun over her shoulder, and waits for the door to open. Sombra gets up, holding her neck, but follows her in. No eye contact.
I don't want them to change you.
Widowmaker didn't know she was worth saving.
