Listen y’all -- I love my Destiel-shipping brothers and sisters. I really do.
But what I absolutely do not love is this constant push by Destiel fans to make Destiel canon.
Like, there are great reasons for the argument -- why can’t we have more gay representation on the show? But what’s not cool is thinking that this representation has to come from Dean and Cas. Even more, it’s so exhausting to watch people insist that TPTB have been somehow baiting us with romantic tropes when, in reality, (1) They’ve explicitly stated that they have no intention to make Destiel canon, (2) Dean is a canonically heterosexual character, (3) They’re only trying to write a strong friendship between two men, and (4) Many of the “romantic” things Cas does can be explained by the fact that he’s an angel with significantly different mannerisms.
And beyond those arguments, making Destiel canon would be a poor writing decision simply because (1) It would take focus away from Dean and Sam and put it onto Dean and Cas, and (2) Supernatural has never been about romance anyway. The writers could essentially shoot themselves in the foot with this storyline. Yes, it may be pleasing to a subset of the fandom, but overall, it would take the show in a radically different direction that’s quite unlike the Supernatural that viewers expect.
I just. Ugh. I’m tired of the sense of entitlement people have with this ship. Let it go.
(I’m sorry, I know this isn’t a popular topic. It’s just that every now and then, something comes up, and all of a sudden, my feelings on this matter come rushing back. Please don’t think I’m trying to attack Destiel shippers here -- this is a criticism of a certain behavior among certain people.)
