Wait, Shavuot? You’re Jewish? ��

I was actually raised gentile, but I’m considering conversion! And I’ve been invited to a couple of Shavuot events including a Zoom Seder with some local friends, so I thought I’d make cheesecake to show off.  

Quarantine really slowed down the whole conversion process, but I figure Judaism, if history is anything to go by, will still be there a few months from now. :D Also, in some ways it makes shopping for a shul a bit easier because you don’t have to endure the awkwardness of attending services in person and not knowing anyone or half the stuff you’re supposed to do.

I read that as “autumnal straw accident” and now I can’t stop snorfling

Honestly I have definitely been the survivor of at least a few autumnal straw accidents.

I've seen people with plaid hair before! You have to use the same techniques used for streaks and tips, and it takes super a lot of planning, but professional hairdressers totally can do (simple) plaids! It's similar to people who have that rainbow waterfall thing going on

Guys, plaid hair sounds amazing and I want it. I’ve never had my hair dyed professionally, but perhaps someday.

I read this and said "Sam. Sam. You fucker." out loud, and my sister knew immediately that I'd just read this post. She wants the pierogies one.

Vilya doesn't know about Pyrah.

The first book, The Thief, is very YA (and thus not really indicative of the rest, but if you like the characters, it’s really worth continuing on), about a thief named Gen, who gets arrested in the middle of his thieving and then is forced to go on a journey to find a mystical artifact which will help the king (of the country where Gen is imprisoned, not his own country) force the queen of Gen’s country to marry him (the king, not Gen).

The rest of the books follow Gen’s adventures as he (and everyone around him) has to deal with the fallout of the first book. I don’t want to spoil too much because these books did surprise me on occasion, almost always in a good way. But they deal with war, and the prevention thereof, via diplomacy and deception, and how politics complicates relationships, and how people deal with the consequences of their own (and other people’s) actions.

The books are set in a vaguely Greek set of countries (Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis - collectively, the Little Peninsula) which are beset by the threat of an invasion from the Mede (ersatz Persian) Empire. There are “greater powers” on the Continent of which the Little Peninsula is part, but we don’t see much of them until later in the series. They all have a vaguely early 19th century level of technology (cannons and guns, but no steam engines), and while there are also gods, who are appropriately mysterious and capricious, there’s no magic, per se. Just a lot of people being too clever for their own good sometimes.

Whalen Turner does a lot of interesting things with POV and who knows what when, which I found fascinating on a structural level as well as a narrative one. And the prose is really lovely. The first book is in first person, but the rest are more standard third person limited with rotating narrators.

It’s pretty obvious how bashful they are, but they seem to be flattered.

Ooooh, that certainly figured. The mouse must’ve had some very good friends or knew a fantastic creator, that was honestly a pretty nice set of clothing. I had to admit, the mouse had my attention aesthetically. They were a blushy little thing, though, standing a good few inches shorter than I was, despite their ears making up that difference. Mouse Ephelli weren't too common, but not unheard of, so his question wasn't too farfetched. "Nah, it's alright. San Fran's kinda big for new arrivals, I'll admit."
