The Godfather opened in New York on a rainy Wednesday. [Al] Ruddy watched it then for the first time with a general audience, sitting beside Pacino. They had both already seen the film so many times they decided to sneak out at the beginning and come back about 10 minutes from the end. “The lights come on, and it was the eeriest feeling of all time: there was not one sound,” Ruddy recalls. “No applause. The audience sat there, stunned.” — Godfather producer Al Ruddy recalls the audience's first reaction to the film. Al Pacino has said many times that he left the premiere early, but neglected to mention that he went back! This is the scene that he was met on March 15th at Loew's State Theatre, back in 1972.
