10. “Why are you smiling?”

It’s his first day of school, the time has flown by and it’s mad but it’s actually here. Robert’s all nervous, doing that typical dad thing and going through a check list for Jacob who isn’t even listening, instead he’s jumping up and down and ruining his new trainers.

“Right, that’s the lunch box sorted and - you have your fruit yeah bud?” Robert says, looks at his little boy sitting on the step now by the kitchen, nodding his head eagerly.

“I’m a big boy now, no lists.” Jacob shakes his head and laughs just as Aaron walks towards him and gives him a high five. Robert’s heart melts at the bond they have.

“You’ll be fine today won’t you?” Aaron says, picking Jacob up in his arms even though he’s too heavy for it now really.

  Aaron flattens down his son’s brown hair, curly and unruly and presses a kiss to his temple.

“Yeah!” Jacob cheers, head falling back as Aaron tickles his neck and then watches him slide down his leg and run towards Robert.

“Daddy giant drive me to school.” Jacob says, tugs at Robert’s leg until Robert looks at him and frowns, guilty. 

“Remember what I said last night?” Robert says, voice so soft that it makes Aaron smile instantly. Robert kneels and watches Jacob sit on his lap. “Daddy fluffy gets to take you to school and I get to pick you up don’t I?“ 

Jacob’s green eyes flicker and his long lashes distract Robert for a second before he rubs at his son’s little arms. 

"In the nice car?” Jacob suddenly springs to life, realising what it all means. "The cool red one daddy?“ Jacob is ecstatic, jumping around the place and then being told to calm down by Aaron lightly. 

"Yeah, the white one.” Robert chuckles, ruffles Jacob’s hair and then watches Aaron search for his little coat. 

“Come on you, we need to make sure we’re not late.” Aaron says, gulping down his lukewarm tea and watching Jacob’s little hands reach for his book bag and special pencil case Victoria bought him for good luck. 

“Right,” Aaron says, spinning Jacob around a few times and making their son laugh before he pulls his coat on and looks nervously towards Robert. He hasn’t said how anxious he is about Jacob facing other kids his age, other quick kids who would realise that he has two daddies, no mummy in sight. They’ve tried to prepare him for it, can’t be too sure if it’s been enough though.

Robert comes towards them and holds Aaron by the waist. “Don’t worry.” He whispers into his ear before looking down at their boy and smiling. “You have the bestest ever day at school yeah?" 

Jacob nods quickly and hugs at his dad’s legs until Robert kneels down and pulls him into his arms. "Love ya so much kid.” He says and Aaron’s eyes widen as he hears Robert getting a little choked up about it all.

Jacob runs towards the door, his eagerness becoming overwhelming and Aaron opens the door for him to run out and climb into the back of the car. Aaron grabs his packed lunch and then looks at Robert, catches the older man off guard as he stands there trying to stop tears from falling down his face.

Aaron just smiles, can’t help but feel all this warmness flow through his veins. 

Robert catches on and scoffs, “What are you smiling at?” He says, clears his throat and tries to shake off his emotion, shake of this made feeling he gets inside him as he wonders how his own father felt when he sent him off to school for the first time. Was it like this? Did he cry? That’s what he was thinking before he saw Aaron looking at him all dopey grin and large eyes.

Aaron comes towards Robert, “You.” He says with a shrug, “You made out like it wasn’t a big deal last night when I was all nervous.” He adds and Robert bites his lip. Aaron kisses him softly and then not so softly. “You’re an amazing daddy you know, your dad would be proud." 

Robert cries again at that, goes all soft and kisses Aaron with all this emotion and love. 

When he pulls away Aaron’s still smiling and it’s almost like Robert can read his mind. 

"No, I mean - you really want another - really?” Robert stammers out, knows Aaron’s cheeky smile and what it means.

He’s bloody broody.

“I want it again, with you.” Aaron says shyly, still smiling. 

Robert thinks, doesn’t really need to think for that long and then he’s nodding his head and Aaron’s still smiling, smiles all the way to the school and then he cries as he sees Jacob race towards his class and start to talk really loudly about his dad’s cool car they’ll all see when he comes and gets him.

To Robert:

Buckled, sitting in the car crying buckets!

Aaron hits send and then smiles as he sees a message come through within seconds.

From Robert:

@robronsnugglebean ~ ingrid is one of the most purest, sweetest people in this whole fandom and anyone who thinks differently can honestly just fight me right now because i am so protective of her it’s a joke, she’s constantly a positive and warm person in this fandom and she never fails to make me smile honestly!

@justleavemebreathless ~ jaqueline is just a delight, so so gifted (do you ge the pun? she does amazing gif sets) and she’s just such a warm and caring person, always supportive, always the first person to tell you they liked something you did and so one. she’s just amazing!

@annemonyk-g ~ monica is a gift honestly, always so supportive and encouraging and more people need to be aware of how amazing she is because honestly she’s just the best!
