A dangerous convenience
The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s RoboSimian saw its lithium-ion battery overloaded and caught on fire in 2016. According to NASA, the explosion of its 96 cells was the equivalent of a stick of dynamite.
We carry lithium-ion batteries on us almost every minute of every day, and while their dangers are a known quality – who could’ve missed Samsung’s disastrous Galaxy Note 7 launch – few envision a move away from the pervasive battery technology.

In June, RoboSimian and up to 18 other finalists will have to make their way through an obstacle course that simulates eight common scenarios. Each robot will attempt to drive a car, move across rubble, use a tool and climb stairs, all without a human controlling it. DARPA says the final competitors should be as competent as a 2-year-old child. The winning team will receive a $2 million prize.

Meet RoboSimian, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s official entry at the DARPA Robotics Challenge in December 2013. Also known as “Clyde,” the robot is is four-footed, but can also stand on two feet. It has four general-purpose limbs and hands capable of both mobility and manipulation. It came in 5th place out of 16 entries. See RoboSimian in action at the disaster-response competition.
