Robert Henri was America's top art teacher in NYC in the early 20th century. His hero was Frans Hals the 17th century Dutchman who revolutionized portraiture. A perfect example is Hals' swift and simple handling of hands and feet. TOP is a traditional hand. Below left is a simple, powerful Hals' hand. Bottom right is a photo I took of Henri's foot of the Salome in the Ringling Museum in Sarasota Florida. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was perhaps the main driving force in modern art in the USA. She also fought for custody of Anderson Cooper's mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, after Gloria's mother came out of the Vanderbilt mansion's closet. Great woman.
