Near the 100th Meridian
These shots, of a westbound container train, were taken just two and one-half miles west of Cozad, Nebraska. This is very close to the 100th meridian, which played a hand in the building of the first transcontinental railroad.
Both the Union Pacific as well as the Union Pacific, Eastern Division (a separate entity), wanted to be the eastern principle of the transcontinental line. The railroad that first reached the 100th meridian would have the privilege of racing to meet up with the Central Pacific Railroad. The Union Pacific made it first, and the UPED later became the Kansas Pacific Railway.
