I still think Dmitri is possibly also in love with the Asset in The Shape of Water.
Like whether or not he's in love romantically with the Asset, everything about the movie suggests that he has come to care greatly about the Asset living. Dmitri is also one of the only other characters besides Elisa and Giles who acknowledge the creature as being beautiful.

I find the jokes funny as well, but I feel like downgrading The Shape of Water to just "she fucked a fish" undermines the film's themes of love and acceptance and its celebration of the outcasts of society.
