I’ve been going through some things in my personal life, which have affected both my work and my presence here on tumblr (I’ll make a catch-up post later), BUT, this morning: the house is quiet, my tea is made, and I’m starting to read Robert Bartlett’s The Making of Europe: Conquest, Colonization, and Cultural Change 950-1350. I think I’m also going to light my favourite candle, pull my blanket onto the couch, and curl up for an hour or two of reading in my own little world.

Many religions have the idea of a holy man or woman—a living human being with extraordinary powers derived from special contact with the divine. Medieval Christianity developed to an extreme degree a distinctive form of this concept: the idea that the dead bodies of these holy people should be cherished as enduring sources of supernatural power.
