Drabble Time
âBrocky, what cha doing out here? Weâre making waffles.â The noise of the breakfast preparation was amplified when the back door was open, quieting down when his friend shut the door. Brock didnât look up from the picture on his phone, wondering why he had bothered to look. The picture that glowed in the morning light was innocuous at first glace for someone whose heart wasnât Brockâs. It was him and Brian, sharing a moment from the party last night. It captured Brianâs kiss on his temple and Brockâs small smile of happiness. An arm around his waist, their bodies pressed together in a dance that felt romantic when submerged in alcohol. The moment had felt so perfect, like a dream heâd been waiting for since meeting the flirty Irish man in his first college class three years ago. Â
I love my best friend! But apparently, he was the only one. Brianâs comment bore down into his heart, carving out the warm feeling and tossing it somewhere Brock couldnât touch. And it was that, the cold realization that came through him so suddenly, that made his eyes swell with tears he couldnât hold back.Â
âBrock?â Brianâs closeness made Brock jump, quick to try and wipe the tear that spilled over his cheek. But when Brian caught his hand to pull it away from the wetness on his face, Brock knew heâd been caught. âWhy areâŚplease donât cry. I canât stand to see you cry.â
âSorry, I just-â despite his best effort to smile, the sob rolled through his lips, his heart squeezing when feeling Brianâs gentle caress against the back of his hand. He tried to tuck the phone closer to his chest to hide it from Brian, but blue eyes were quick to pick up the movement.Â
âIs that us?â Brianâs smile faded slightly, voice losing its steady edge. âFrom last nightâŚdid you not like that picture? Shit, I just-I didnât think youâd mind-â
âI love it!â Brockâs words came out shakey from the tears, smile wobbly when his confession slipped through. âItâs just... I was so happy when you kissed me.â
âYou were?â Brian asked, blinking when Brock nodded once. Happiness crossed the otherâs face, but Brock watched it turn into hesitation. âI donât wanna...read this wrong. So I gotta ask, why are you crying?âÂ
âIsnât it obvious?â Brockâs hand twitched under the hold that made it impossible to pull away, and he swallowed to give himself strength. âBecause I think...I think Iâm in love with you. And that scares the crap out of me.âÂ
âOh, sweetheart.â In an instant, Brock was pulled into Brianâs chest. His lips parted to object, but no words came out, Brianâs mouth covering his in a kiss that swept any thoughts of talking away. The sweetness of the morning breakfast and Brianâs natural taste overwhelmed him, and his heart burst at the affectionate nibble that was pressed to his lower lip. The back of his head was cradled through the kiss, like Brian was scared Brock would dissapear. But Brock didnât pull back, eyes fluttering closed while sinking into the sensation heâd been dreaming of.Â
And the morning sun shined on, basking the two lovebirds in its warm glow.Â
