Wood-grain concrete pavers echo the River District’s sawmill past. Not only was this new condo community once home to a massive sawmill, it was also the site of Dominion Creosoting, which, over a hundred years ago, produced wooden cobbles to pave Vancouver streets.

The second pic shows the wood treatment plant sometime after it re-located there from Coal Harbour in 1910. [Archive note dates pic as 1920s.] Wood cobbles (stacked on left) were loaded into barrel cages, which were then rolled into cylindrical chambers called retorts where the load was pressure cooked with creosote from all those iron drums stacked in the background.

The third image shows a worker repairing wood blocks on Pender Street at Main in 1914. Asphalt eventually became the preferred surface material in Vancouver, but Dominion continued to supply pressure treated wood for other uses such as dock pilings and railway ties.

The mill was such a landmark in South Van’s under-developed corner, that a 1919 map shows the BCER interurban stop there as Carbolineum Works Station. (Carbolineum is another word for creosote, sort of.)

Dominion’s founder, William H. Harvey, built a grand house overlooking his mill, but today not many people see the heritage-listed home because it is hidden inside the Marine Woods townhouse complex – 3358 SE Marine Dr.
